The Coachella Valley is home to a number of events and activities to enjoy — even in the heat. If you’re interested in filling your calendar, we’ve put together a list of 14 things happening this week in the valley and nearby communities.

2024 Pride Show ‘Wildthots’
Join Rubine Red Gallery for the first show of the 2024-25 season, which doubles as an introduction of artist Marcus Rothering, who’s new to Southern California. This will be ceramics and fiber artist Rothering’s first-ever solo show, and it’s a collection of fantastical — and sensual — new works. In his own words, Rothering’s exhibit is “a carousel of my practice displaying queerness in different phases using all ranges of visualization.”

4th annual Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration
Honor the significant artistic and cultural contributions made by Indigenous people this Monday at Idyllwild Arts’ annual Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration. The event will be headlined by the Delbert Anderson Quartet (DAQ), led by Diné jazz trumpet artist Delbert Anderson, who recently performed at the Kennedy Center and has gained national recognition with recent feature coverage in The New York Times, SF Gate and NPR. Presented by the Native American Arts Center at Idyllwild Arts, this event features live music as well as a glassblowing demo and complimentary Indigenous Foods Luncheon (included crowd-favorite frybread).

Revolution Stage Co. presents ‘I Do! I Do!’
Walk down the aisle and kick off the 2024-25 cultural season at this Revolution Stage Company show. As its website says, this show follows “the journey of marriage” and tells a “heartwarming and humorous celebration of love … based on the hit Broadway production.” The plot follows the 50-year marriage of Michael and Agnes, “capturing the essence of their relationship from the blissful wedding night to the bittersweet golden years.”

Friends of the Desert Hot Springs Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Desert Hot Springs Library will host its large Fall Book Sale this week. Publicity Chair Sally Hedberg said volunteers have been busy sorting 50 boxes of books across several genres and topics including history, science fiction, biology, space, transportation, travel, cooking, as well as children and YA. A bag of books can be purchased for $3, and there is no limit to the number of bags. The event will also feature an opportunity drawing for prizes donated by local merchants, such as vouchers to local restaurants, spas, hotels, salons, grocery stores, and a cash prize of $100. Lean into the Halloween spirit and come in costume to receive one free opportunity ticket for the drawing. All proceeds raised will go to funding library programs.
When: 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18; and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19

Fall Concerts in the Park: OC Groove
Head to Civic Center Park every Thursday this month for a different live performance. The fall lineup features a wide variety of local favorites to entertain audiences of all ages and musical tastes, along with a special Halloween performance the entire family can enjoy. The fun continues this week with OC Groove, who will bring an evening of live rock, funk and R&B favorites to the park.
When: Food trucks and garden opens at 5 p.m., and the concert will start at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17

Friday Night On Pierson featuring Amapiano Xperience
Friday Nights on Pierson has a special guest this Friday. According to a press release, the weekly food truck event in downtown Desert Hot Springs will be infused with “the vibrant rhythms of South Africa” and “the iconic flavors of West African jollof rice” on Oct. 18, thanks to the “Amapiano Xperience.” This event-within-the-event promises “a unique cultural fusion“ celebrating African music as well as the quintessential West African jollof rice dish. So, grab a bowl and enjoy live performances and DJ sets introducing Californians to amapiano music, a genre originating in South Africa that blends deep house, jazz, and lounge music.

Musical Theatre University presents ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’
Two-time Tony Award nominee Alison Fraser will join 24 local performing arts students at this live show, which marks the kickoff to MTU’s 2024-25 season. Expect gender-bending dynamics at MTU’s version of the beloved five-time Tony Award-winning show (including Best Book and Best Original Score). A fictitious musical’s cast recording comes to life in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a celebration of the Golden Age musical that follows (as MTU’s website says), “two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone.”

Halloween Paw Parade + Pet Costume Contest
One of the most adorable Halloween events in the whole valley is presented by Boozehounds to raise funds for the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Dress up your four-legged friends in their best Halloween attire and get ready to make North Palm Springs their runway. It all kicks off with coffee and donuts at the parade start line near Vista Del Monte Elementary School, followed by a parade ending with treats and eats at the Boozehounds parking lot. Local celebrity judges will award the best-dressed pet at the end of the morning.

The return of the Indio Farmers Market
Due to thee excessive heat warnings, the City of Indio chose to delay the return of its weekly Indio Farmers Market, but it will finally kick off its 2024-25 season on Saturday. Shop a vast array of local vendors, fresh produce and artisan goods while enjoying everything else the revitalized Downtown Indio has to offer.

Desert Film Society presents a screening of ‘Sallywood’
Meet this award-winning film’s producer at the next Desert Film Society screening. Based on a true-life story, this film follows Zack, a 20-something writer who’s been inspired by the movies of actress Sally Kirkland since childhood, who gets up the courage to make a move from his small town in Maine to Hollywood to pursue his career dreams. In a chance meeting with Sally the week he arrives, she hires him on the spot to be her personal assistant — and so much more.

Green Room Theatre Company Quinceañera
Green Room Theatre Company Coachella Valley will celebrate its 15th season with a special Quinceañera celebration this weekend. The traveling theater troupe, which brings live shows to underserved neighborhoods, will mark the occasion with an evening of live performances including colorful ballet folklorico (featuring youth and instructor Marisol Reyes), monologues, musical numbers and dance performances from Julian Perez, Heaven Rodriguez, Mike Braswell, Dawnielle Smith, Christopher Manes, Judalon Manes and Zelaya Sanchez. To top it all off, Broadway actress Haley Izurieta will perform live during this afternoon of food, entertainment and raffles, all in support of Green Room Theatre.

2024 Tacos, Tequila, & Chavelas Festival
Looking to top off your week with a good meal and/or beverage? Head to this event hosted by the City of Coachella, in partnership with the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, featuring a live band and DJ, mechanical bull rides, roping and corn hole games, food booths and aguas frescas. Up to a dozen taco vendors competed in the past for the “Best of Festival” title, and this year, you can sample all participating restaurants’ tacos for $20 (pre-tax). A signature handcrafted chavela and tequila bar will have adult beverages available for attendees to purchase as well.

Opening Reception for ‘PAN•O•RAMA: Landscapes, Seascapes, Escapes’
Join fellow art aficionados, as their press release states, while “the Coachella Valley awakens from its summer slumber for the glorious new season ahead.” Head to MAD.KAT Gallery to celebrate the start of the 2024-25 season with new exhibit “PAN•O•RAMA: Landscapes, Seascapes, Escapes.” Expect to see artwork by “seven very diverse artists who approach their subject matter from unique perspectives with varied styles, techniques and mediums.” Those who attend the opening reception will have the opportunity to meet featured artists Patrick Dennis, Brady Willmott, Grayson Kent, Rocio Delgadoa and Kim A. Tolman.

Fall Festival & Art Show
Looking for some family friendly fall fun this weekend? This free event in Old Town La Quinta features a pumpkin patch, Certified Farmers Market, “stuffing station,” face painting, food, drinks, live music, and fall-themed photo opportunities. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., kids and adults alike can pick out the perfect pumpkin at the pumpkin patch presented by Raul Family Farms. The “stuffing station” presented by Bear Party 2 Go will be available throughout the event for little ones to stuff their own plushie animal or squishie.
