More than four dozen student-athletes from Reno, Sparks, McQueen and Spanish Springs signed to play at the next level Wednesday.
Of the 52 that signed, 19 are from Reno, 17 go to McQueen, 10 are at Spanish Springs and six go to Sparks. Six of the 19 Huskies that signed will compete at Division I schools, including two at Power 5 programs. Reno’s Addison Crain will swim at Iowa and Tannis Jackin will play softball at Boston College.
“When I went on my visit, I just had a really positive experience there,” Crain said. “The team was super welcoming and obviously being a Big Ten school, all the facilities and the coaching are really superior, so I’m very excited. I’ve been wanting to swim in college since I was 7 years old. It’s just my dream, so I’m so excited to play at the highest level.”
Added Jackin: “Boston College was the perfect fit for me athletically and academically. I always wanted to go to a high academic school, so I thought that was really great to be able to do that at Boston. I started playing when I was 4 years old, so I’ve always wanted to play in college once I knew that was even a possibility.
Huskies’ Amber Keen will play volleyball at San Diego State and Cael Mattioli will run track and cross country at St. Mary’s. Five athletes will stay home to compete at Nevada, including cross country runner Thalia Arrate of Reno, baseball player Jack Helmholz of Reno, baseball player Jacob Doyle of Spanish Springs and McQueen football player Jayden LaGrone. Damonte Ranch softball player Avery Cordell will sign to play at Nevada on Thursday.
“Being down there felt like home on my visit,” Keen said of signing with SDSU. “It’s a crazy process for me recruiting-wise, but I definitely couldn’t have asked for more with them. They provided a bunch of resources.”
Helmholz, who will play baseball for Nevada, said he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to compete at the college level without his coach, Pete Savage.
“Coach Savage, I really can’t thank them enough,” Helmholz said. “He put this all together. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to do this. So I just want to thank him just for everything he’s done.”
Of the 68 athletes that will sign this week, 19 are headed to Division I schools, with Damonte Ranch and Galena holding signing days Thursday. The full list of student-athletes signing this week can be found here.
