On March 29th, WBEZ presents an evening at Thalia Hall with national leader and senior United States senator of New Jersey, Cory Booker, to celebrate the release of his new book, Stand.
In Stand, Booker offers an optimistic and practical path forward in today’s political and social landscape, weaving together powerful stories and stirring personal reflections to remind us that our country’s shared ideals can serve as a North Star to guide us. At this event, Booker will explore how to wield our personal and political principles in ways that reclaim our national story and redeem the American dream. This program is presented with special support from Chicago Humanities.
Bios
Cory Booker is the senior United States senator from New Jersey. Booker earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Stanford University, attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and earned a law degree at Yale University. He served as mayor of Newark before becoming New Jersey’s first Black senator and only the fourth popularly elected Black senator in US history. Booker is a national leader in the effort to expand economic opportunity and create safe, strong, nurturing communities for every American family. He lives in Newark’s Central Ward.
Sasha-Ann Simons is an award-winning journalist and the host of WBEZ’s In the Loop. She’s an alum of Washington, D.C.’s NPR station WAMU where she was a program host, regularly behind the mic on newscasts and talk shows. Sasha-Ann was also a national reporter, focused on issues of race, identity and economic mobility. Her accolades include an Edward R. Murrow award and a radio feature award from the National Association of Black Journalists. In 2022, she received a Peter Lisagor award for health and science reporting from the Chicago Headline Club. Sasha-Ann has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and studied film and television production at American University.
