Leadership Coachella Valley is accepting applications through June 5 for its next class, offering residents a unique opportunity to learn about the region while building valuable professional and personal connections.
NBC Palm Springs’ Thalia Hayden, a member of the Class of 2026, spoke with Leadership Coachella Valley board member Kelly Tweedie about the six-month program and its impact on participants.
“It’s a fantastic program that for some reason isn’t incredibly well known around the valley,” Tweedie said.
The program brings together a diverse group of participants, including nonprofit leaders, city employees, students, healthcare professionals, business leaders, and other community members. Throughout 10 sessions, participants explore different aspects of the Coachella Valley, including economic development, arts and culture, sustainability, media, education, healthcare, and the justice system.
Tweedy said one of the program’s greatest strengths is exposing participants to resources and organizations they may not have known existed.
“I lived here for 26 years and thought I knew everything there was to know,” she said. “There is so much more to know—medical resources, nonprofits, resources for families, and organizations helping people every day.”
For Hayden, one of the most impactful experiences was Education Day, where participants toured schools in the eastern Coachella Valley and learned about programs supporting students’ academic and mental health needs.
Beyond education, participants visit courthouses, media organizations, and other institutions to gain a behind-the-scenes look at how the Coachella Valley operates.
Tweedie emphasized that applicants do not need to view themselves as established leaders to be considered.
“It’s not about the leaders who are already making changes,” she said. “It’s about the up-and-coming leaders. Connections create opportunity, and it’s about putting yourself in the room with people who can help you get to the next level.”
The program has graduated hundreds of participants over the past 25 years, creating a strong alumni network across the valley.
While there is a cost to participate, but many employers are willing to sponsor employees because participants bring valuable leadership skills and community knowledge back to their organizations.
