JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The doors at Thalia Mara Hall are expected to reopen on Saturday, January 18. It’s been at least six months since a production took place on the stage at the facility.
Ballet Mississippi officials are hopeful they can return to Thalia Mara Hall in the near future.
Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said this week that air quality lab results are expected soon. He said samples for mold and asbestos are being taken to make sure the facility is safe to re-enter.
The facility closed in August 2024 after mold was discovered.
Thalia Mara Hall on track to reopen this week
Ballet Mississippi hosted one of their largest productions, “The Nutcracker,” at Jackson Prep in December 2024. David Keary, the Artistic and Executive Director for Ballet Mississippi, appreciated having the venue, but he acknowledged it wasn’t the same.
“There’s a big difference between the stage and the mechanics of a professional theater and one that is not, and the dancers feel it,” he said.
Keary stressed the importance of replacing the fire curtain at Thalia Mara Hall. Lumumba said it was removed last Friday.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office will do a walk through of the facility on Thursday, January 16.
