Issues such as Roe Vs Wade and gun control will be on voters’ minds as they head to the polls today, but it’s not only US citizens claiming a vested interest in who wins the race for the White House.
Even before the victor in the presidential race is revealed, a number of British stars have decided life in America is too risky to contemplate and have bid farewell to their adopted homeland, citing political reasons for their return to the UK.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar last week, Joan star and mother-of-two Sophie Turner, 28, revealed that gun violence and the overturning of Roe v Wade, meaning the right to abortion is no longer protected as a constitutional right, fuelled her decision to ‘get the f*** out of there’.
Meanwhile, Florida-born architect Dara Huang, the mother of Princess Beatrice‘s stepson Wolfie Mapelli Mozzi, 8, has chosen to settle in the UK because of her fears over school shootings.
Saoirse Ronan, the Irish American actress, has also been vocal about Trump’s ‘barbaric’ easing of restrictions on gun ownership, saying that she fears being shot in a cinema in the US.
The Oscar-nominated star is married to British actor Jack Lowden, of Slow Horses fame, but the couple have predominantly based themselves between Ireland and the UK, when they could position themselves as a Hollywood power couple.
In 2022, Ozzy Osbourne announced plans to move back to the UK with his wife Sharon because he didn’t ‘want to die in crazy America’.
The singer, 75, who has resided in Beverly Hills for more than 25 years, claimed ‘everything’s f****** ridiculous’ Stateside and highlighted the country’s history of school shootings, saying: ‘I’m fed up with people getting killed every day.’

The move, however, has since been delayed by Ozzy’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, but his wife Sharon insists that it will happen.
‘We’ll get there. We wanna go back so bad, but we’ll get there,’ she said. ‘It isn’t the United States of America at all. Nothing’s united about it. It’s a very weird place to live right now.’
Sophie Turner
She uprooted her life in the UK to move to LA and then Miami for her four-year marriage to 35-year-old singer Joe Jonas.
However, their divorce, which was finalised in September, a little over a year after the singer filed for separation, wasn’t the only reason that Sophie Turner decided to move back home.
The Game of Thrones actress, 28, revealed the real reason she left the US and touched upon homesickness and motherhood as she graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s December and January issue.
Before the breakdown of their marriage, Sophie, who hails from Northampton, and her ex-husband Joe, 35, had been living in America with their two daughters, Willa, four, and Delphine, two, but she was desperate to move back to the UK.
Lifting the lid on the homesickness she felt, the Joan star said: ‘Every city we ended up in, the first thing I’d do was find a British shop and stock up on a month’s worth of chocolate.
However, Sophie revealed gun violence and changes to laws in the US were a key motivator in her wanting to return home, saying: ‘The gun violence, Roe v Wade being overturned… Everything just kind of piled on. After the Uvalde [school] shooting, I knew it was time to get the f*** out of there.’

She continued: ‘The gun violence, Roe v Wade being overturned… Everything just kind of piled on.’
In June 2022, America’s top court overturned the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling which had guaranteed women the right to an abortion up until the point of fetal viability, which is about 24 weeks.
Since moving back to the UK, Sophie has found success not only in her career with the drama Joan, but also in her personal life, moving on with aristocrat Peregrine Pearson.
She recently went Instagram official with her boyfriend, aristocrat Peregrine Pearson, delighting fans.
On Sunday, she shared a picture of the pair kissing under a tent alongside others showing them cosied up together on a canal boat, posing on a hot air balloon and skiing.
The Game Of Thrones star appeared smitten as she shared a sweet album to Instagram to wish her partner a happy birthday – just weeks after her divorce was finalised
Of her return she said: ‘I’m so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England.
‘I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long – six years – and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant.
‘I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, ‘I never got to touch your belly.’ We didn’t have those key experiences with each other.’
Sophie’s character in Joan is a single mother trying to provide for her children in the new six-part crime series and the actress reflected on her own experience, admitting it has ‘changed her so much in every way‘.
She explained: ‘Before I had kids, I was very depressed and anxious, and I would isolate [myself] a lot. Now, I think I live my life for them. I want them to see me having a social life and enjoying work and thriving in my career and relationships.
‘I want them to see a hard-working mum. I’ll come back and say, ‘This is why Mummy was away – it’s because she’s doing this for you, so Father Christmas can come with a big bundle of presents.”
Dara Huang
The American mother of Princess Beatrice’s stepson also cited gun violence in the States as a reason for moving to the UK.
In 2022, Dara Huang, 41, voiced her relief that her eight-year-old son, Christopher Woolf Mapelli Mozzi, or ‘Wolfie’ as he is known, will be educated in Britain rather than his native America, where she fears he could have become a victim of a school shooting.
The successful architect was engaged to interior designer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 40, before he married the King’s niece Princess Beatrice, 36.
‘I’m glad my son doesn’t go to school in the USA,’ Dara declared online. ‘I can sleep at night knowing he won’t die at his desk tomorrow morning.’
As of September, there were more than 385 mass shootings across the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Her son has been welcomed warmly into the Royal Family, joining the King and Queen on their walk to church at Sandringham on Christmas Day.

The 41-year-old was born and grew up in America, to where her maternal grandfather had emigrated from Taiwan. She was granted British citizenship in 2022.
The architect, who featured in Channel 4’s property programme Britain’s Most Expensive Houses, made the comments after returning to the US for Christmas in 2022 while Wolfie was at the King’s Norfolk retreat with his father and stepmother.
‘Not to get all political here, but I went to a sports store in the US to buy tennis shoes today and couldn’t help but notice this huge gun section – post Xmas sale,’ Dara said.
‘So I walked up to the man and said, ”What do I need to buy a gun home? Do I need a licence?” And he said, ‘No, you can buy one right now and either take it in two days or take a $50 two-hour conceal and carry course and bring it home right now.’
‘And I said, ”OK, so no licence needed, medical records, history of felony?” And he said, ”Nope. You can keep it in your car or home, as you see fit.” ‘
She added: ‘Literally anybody can buy the most dangerous weapon known to man.’
While property tycoon Edoardo is descended from Italian nobility, he was born in London and is a British citizen.
Edoardo was previously engaged for three-and-a-half years to the mother of his first child, Chinese-American Miss Huang, a highly-successful architect with her own design company whom he split from in 2018, a year before proposing to Princess Beatrice.
Their son Christopher Woolf – who goes by Wolfie, was also born in the UK. They share custody of the eight-year-old and Beatrice is said to have grown close to him, with Sarah Ferguson saying she considers him a grandson.
Weekend trips to Paris, driving through Mayfair in a town car, celebrity clients and incredibly glamorous photoshoots are the norm for Dara, the extremely chic ex-fiancee of Princess Beatrice ‘s husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi
She is understood to remain on good terms with her ex and his new wife and Beatrice is a hands-on stepmother.
Dara, who was born in Florida to Taiwanese parents has worked for celebrities including Margot Robbie, was a head judge on Channel 4’s 2023 show The Big Interiors Battle.
Speaking in September to The Wick she said she feels ‘really blessed’ to live in London as it celebrates ‘art, design, fashion, history, culture and also food’.
She added that she considers herself ‘global’ and that she ‘reads her diary every night, and ‘couldn’t live without her PA’.
Her Instagram page shows regular getaways, including kid-friendly Disney cruises with Wolfie and her parents, as well as luxurious homes she’s built, trips to spas, children’s parties and gifts from Cartier.
The 41-year-old also shares tips for buying art, and snaps of her upmarket west London home.
Cat Deeley
Cat Deeley decided to return to the UK after her husband and son were caught up in a gun scare.
The TV star, 48, who has two sons, Milo, eight, and James, six, moved to the US more than a decade ago and has carved out a successful presenting career over there, fronting hit shows like So You Think You Can Dance?
Cat and Patrick lived happily in Los Angeles for over 14 years, but she described the event at the Century City Mall which was the ‘catalyst’ for their departure in 2020.
She spoke to Lorraine Kelly from her north London home two years after, explaining: ‘The catalyst for it was definitely a moment when Paddy called me and him and Milo were stuck in a shopping mall there.
‘I had to go and pick them up and I didn’t know quite where they were. There were helicopters and police vans and news crews, it was terrifying for me. Everybody was safe and fine, but it was terrifying for me.’

In a previous interview with YOU Mag, the former SM:TV host discussed her anxiety surrounding a possible school shooting when her kids start in the future.
Her fears became a reality when her family had to escape the mall shooting, as she elaborated further on the incident.
She said in September 2022: ‘That danger became even more real last summer when Milo and his father went to the Century City Mall in LA after morning nursery.
‘The FBI turned up with guns and ordered everyone to take cover under counters or hide because a shooter was on the loose.’
Patrick and Milo were forced to take cover in a Shake Shack kitchen when they first discovered a gunman had entered the building.
Cat said her husband was trying to keep their son calm so he didn’t understand the danger and enormity of the situation.
She added: ‘They shut down the centre. I got a call from Paddy, saying, ‘They’re taking us out through the fire exits but nobody can get to their car. If we walk to a junction, can you come and get us?’
‘It was terrifying. Paddy was shaken by it, more than Milo, who was hot and cranky but didn’t properly understand.’
Luckily, they managed to escape the scary event unharmed, and Cat is focused on spending quality time with them and her extended family, which also prompted her decision to move back to London.
In March, the The Sun on Sunday discovered that the gun incident her husband Patrick Kielty, 53, and Milo, eight, were caught up in was done at the hands of ex-Amazon employee Nicholas Oates who pointed a gun at staff at a mall.

Cat and Patrick (pictured in November 2019) lived in Los Angeles for over 14 years, but she described the event at the Century City Mall which was the ‘catalyst’ for their departure
She also said to Lorraine: ‘We had always thought, our boys have got grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins that they adore and they adore them right back.
‘It’s such a special moment in time and you don’t get those times back. We had always thought we would bring them back here so that they would know everyone in the family and friends.’
Cat and Patrick put their Beverly Hills mansion on the market for $4.9 million (£3.8 million), in August 2022.
The sprawling mansion was a four bedroom contemporary home that spans 3,804 square feet, and the ridge-top property boasts modern furnishings, a pool area with stunning cross-canyon views, as well as its own spa.
The TV presenter, 43, first bought the property back in 2006 for $2.7 million (£2.05 million), according to Variety, and had since done extensive renovations to update the late 1970s home.
She returned home to front ITV‘s This Morning alongside Ben Shephard after the magazine show underwent a presenter shakeup following the departures of Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
On February 16, 2024, Cat and Ben were finally confirmed as the upcoming regulars to take over from Holly and Phil, nine months after the iconic duo were broken apart by Schofield’s departure.
It had been claimed that Cat was finally won round with a more lucrative deal, but insiders at ITV denied the claims – insisting it was the ability to spend more time with family which sealed the deal.
Ben said: ‘This really feels like a very special moment for Cat and I to be part of the next chapter of This Morning. It’s an honour to be trusted with the reigns, join Alison and Dermot and all the team that work on and off screen and do such a great job.
Saoirse Ronan
She recently purchased a home in west Cork, Ireland, with her partner and fellow actor Jack Lowden, 34.
American Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was born in New York City before moving to Dublin at the age of three and has repeatedly voiced her thoughts on America’s political affairs.
She silenced the male celebrity guests on the Graham Norton Show after her powerful reminder about violence against women.
The actress, 30, set social media alight after she interjected Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, and Eddie Redmayne as they made a joke about self-defence.
However, this isn’t the first time the Outrun star has spoken her mind after previously weighing in on important topics including American politics, reproductive rights, and sexual harassment.
From branding Trump ‘barbaric’ to admitting her fears of gun crime and supporting abortion all the times Saoirse Ronan has weighed in on politics and reproductive rights

With the US election less than a week away, Saoirse branded Donald Trump a ‘barbaric’ as she explained why she and her friends don’t feel safe in America.
Speaking to the Variety Awards Circuit podcast last weekend, Saoirse said she ‘will absolutely be voting for the right person in this election’, as she referred to the Democratic nominee and current vice president, Kamala Harris.
She explained: ‘I don’t feel safe here anymore. I go into a cinema here when I’m doing a Q&A to promote a movie that I’m in and I’m not sure if someone’s going to pull a gun out.’
The star continued: ‘It’s in your head. That’s an awful feeling. It’s an awful feeling for me to know that my best friends who have just started to have children aren’t feeling 100 per cent safe about sending their kids to school in case they get shot at five-years-old.
‘There’s friends of mine who are thinking about buying bulletproof backpacks for their children to keep them safe. That’s barbaric and he [Donald Trump] has done this.’
Discussing the influence America has over the rest of the world, Saoirse revealed the ripple effect having someone like Trump has on the rest of the world.
She said: ‘I think what happened the first time around was that it opened the floodgates for people who have a very unhealthy mentality, an incredibly racist, bigoted view on people who aren’t them.
‘The idea of the ‘other’ became so prominent and became so toxic, and we’re even seeing it now in Ireland which I never thought would be the case. It’s had such a domino effect on every other place around.’
She added: ‘The US used to be progressive in a lot of ways but to see that taking such a backpedalling when it comes to reproductive rights of course and minorities literally feeling they could be attacked at any point, they could be killed at any point, they are in serious danger’.
‘There’s Asian American women that I work with who I’m really close to who feels like they can’t go to New York anymore which is a place they used to live in, they used to feel safe in, because they’re just randomly getting attacked in the street for f***ing TikTok, for content.’
Saoirse has also made an impact in her own industry after she joined more than 190 female entertainment stars demanding the eradication of sexual harassment from across all industries.
Campaigning ahead of the 2018 BAFTA film awards, Saoirse joined stars including Emma Thompson, Emma Watson and Naomie Harris to sign an open letter as part of the Time’s Up movement, calling for an end to harassment, abuse, and impunity in a world ‘ripe for change’.
She also stood in solidarity with the movement after she wore black to the 2018 Golden Globes to protest against sexual harassment to raise awareness for Time’s Up.
Speaking about her decision to stand with the movement she said: ‘It is the most important thing, and I’ve never felt so encouraged and inspired and supported to use whatever voice I have and for all of these people, men and women.
‘To be able come together and use their influence and to open up the conversation and raise awareness and support anyone who’s gone through, or anyone that has questioned their safety or their stance when they’re on set — I think it’s invaluable and paramount that this happens now.’
