Details of Macy Gray’s disastrous 2017 Perth gig, which saw numerous fans walk out, have resurfaced following her dramatic exit from ITV‘s Saturday night show The Masked Singer.
Earlier this monght, the hit 90s singer was unmasked on the ITV reality show – but things quickly took an unexpected turn when she stormed off the set after her Toad In The Hole character was eliminated.
In September 2017, the American R&B star walked on the stage in the Astor Theatre, Perth two hours late and announced: “Hello Sydney”.
Despite her late arrival it was reported that rather than make it up to fans by playing a full show, she sung two songs and DJ’ed for around half an hour before leaving again. Hundreds of disappointed punters walked out and promoters of the tour were forced to issue a public apology to guests.
The disastrous performance came just three days after the singer had issued a personal letter to fans apologising for disappointing guests at a Bali gig, which she also arrived late for and reportedly gave a below par performance.
On that occassion, the venue, Finns Beach Club, publicly announced it would be refunding the cost of general admission tickets. In her letter, the star had promised to “make it up to” fans if they came to one of her Australian gigs.
She wrote: “I apologise that so many of you were disappointed. Of course, that was not my intention. I won’t bore you with explanations or excuses because they don’t matter anymore”.
It comes after the star stunned viewers of ITV’s The Masked Singer when she stormed off the stage after being eliminated. Despite her best efforts to impress the judges, she was voted off.
After Joel Dommett delivered the disappointing news, the musician walked off stage before she had chance to remove her mask and reveal her identity.
Instead, in a dramatic moment, the singer walked off the stage, visibly upset by the announcement. She eventually made an unexpected return to the stage, where she was unmasked and identified.
Her wore a disappointed expression and she appeared far from pleased with her early exit from the competition
The incident led to an hour-long delay in the broadcast, which was carefully edited out of the pre-recorded programme to ensure that viewers would not be aware of the incident.
This situation parallels an earlier episode involving the star, who experienced a similar emotional outburst in 2021 during her appearance on the Australian version of the show. On that occasion, she became visibly upset and sulked after being voted off.
