Woodstock, Illinois, home site of filming for the 1993 classic “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Stephen Tobolowski, is hosting a Groundhog Days celebration with a plethora of events this year.
This is the 33rd anniversary of the filming, and Woodstock is filling the celebration with events for everyone.
The 2025 schedule begins Jan. 30 and includes groundhog trivia, a Groundhog Day 5K, a showing of the film, a walking tour of the filming sites, a meet-and-greet with Stephen Tobolowski and more. The full schedule can be found at woodstockgroundhog.org.
This annual event began in 1992 when the filming of “Groundhog Day” took place in the Woodstock area, which is 61 miles away from Chicago and about 568 miles from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home to Punxsutawney Phil and the annual Groundhog Day.
As the film has become a fan favorite over the decades, residents and visitors to Woodstock now gather to remember and celebrate the community.
Meet and greet with Stephen Tobolowski
Tobolowski, who plays insurance salesman Ned Ryerson in the film, will be the special guest of the celebration.
Fans will have the opportunity to meet Tobolowski on Feb. 1 from noon to 1 p.m. at 11 E. Van St. in Woodstock to sign copies of his books “The Dangerous Animals Club,” “Cautionary Tales” and “My Adventures With God.”
Groundhog Day 5K
New this year to the Groundhog Day celebration is the Groundhog Day 5K. The race begins Feb.1 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Runners will race past filming locations in the movie including the Pennsylvania Hotel and bowling alley.
Registration can be found on the website and costs $40.
