The Royal Family has released a striking new portrait of King Charles to mark Burns Night.
The palace posted on X: “Wishing those celebrating a very happy #BurnsNight tonight. The King in the Library at Balmoral Castle, taken by Millie Pilkington.”
Burns Night takes place on January 25 each year to celebrate the life and legacy of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns.
Pictured in the library at Balmoral Castle, King Charles sports a striking kilt – which is known as traditional attire in Scotland.
His Majesty, surrounding by a variety of books, is pictured beaming at the camera.
Posed forward facing, the blue and red kilt worn by the King was made from The King Charles III tartan. The library, located at the castle, is reportedly used by the King as his own working study.
The 76-year-old previously hailed Scotland as holding “a uniquely special place” in his heart – as well as his family. At the ceremony to commemorate a quarter of a century since parliament opened at Holyrood last year, the King said: “Speaking from a personal perspective, Scotland has always had a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself.
“My beloved grandmother was proudly Scottish, my late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days.”
Paying tribute to Scotland’s “natural beauty”, the King also noted the country’s “strength of character”, “diversity of its people” and “passions and frequently deeply held beliefs”.
The King added: “From the central belt to the north Highlands, across the islands in Ayrshire, in the Borders, the cities, towns and villages, all the coastal communities, who I wonder, could not fail to be moved by this complex Caledonian kaleidoscope?”
Scotland – more specifically, her much-loved Balmoral – is where the late Queen Elizabeth II chose to spend her final days.
The late Queen, who died in 2022 aged 96, is known to have held a particular love for her Scottish estate. She previously noted, “You can go out for miles and never see anybody, there are endless possibilities.”
