Alabama Shakes reunited last year for their first appearance on stage together in seven years, and now, they’ve teased their official comeback with photos of them working on new music.
“Working on some exciting stuff!,” the Instagram caption reads, with photos depicting the band — Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, and Heath Fogg — crafting the follow-up to 2015’s Sound & Color in a studio with producer Shawn Everett. See Alabama Shakes’ Instagram post below.
The group hasn’t formally released a new song since their Grammy-winning rendition of “Killer Diller Blue” for the soundtrack of The American Epic sessions in 2018. Shortly after, Alabama Shakes went on hiatus as Howard and Fogg began to focus on their solo work.
They resurfaced in December 2024 to perform a benefit concert in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; original drummer Steve Johnson, who pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges in 2020 and was arrested on suspicion of child abuse in 2021 (the charges were eventually dropped) did not perform in the reunion concert, and instead was replaced by Ben Tanner. It is unknown whether Tanner will be participating in Alabama Shakes’ new recording sessions or remain in the live lineup.
Meanwhile, it’s been a busy season already for Brittany Howard. The frontwoman debuted her new hardcore band, Kumite, at a benefit show in Nashville on January 13th. We also recently named Howard’s solo song “Power to Undo” as one of the best songs of 2024.
