On Feb. 8, University Professor Henry Panion III, Ph.D., will conduct Ruben Studdard and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for a Valentine-themed salute to pop superstar Luther Vandross.
The UAB Piano Series brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. This spring, the UAB Piano Series will present Fei-Fei Dong on March 23. The UAB Gospel Choir will perform April 21.
Most performances are held in the Hulsey Center for the Arts’ Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Carlos Izcaray and The Aeolians of Oakwood University under the direction of Jeremy Jordan celebrate Black history with Birmingham native Brian Nabors’ original composition, “Concerto for Hammond Organ, Orchestra, and Chorus.” Assistant Professor Reginald Jackson, Ph.D., director of the UAB Gospel Choir, who has extensive training in classical piano and music education and decades of experience playing the Hammond organ in churches, will be the featured soloist. 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. UAB Piano Series presents Fei-Fei Dong, piano, 4 p.m., in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. Fei-Fei Dong, soloist, recitalist and chamber musician on world stages, conjures a special and undeniable connectivity with her audiences. Her recent projects include artist-in-residence with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic touring in Germany, a Carnegie Hall performance and tour of Spain with the New York Youth Symphony, a cross-disciplinary collaboration with Ballet Arkansas, a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 at Lincoln Center with the Pegasus Symphony, and a 19-city tour of China with Aletheia Piano Trio, which she founded. Featured prominently as a Van Cliburn Competition finalist in the documentary film, “Virtuosity,” she is a member of the piano faculty at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University and teaching associate to pianist Yefim Bronfman at Manhattan School of Music.
