Walking the snow-covered streets of Park City, Utah during Sundance Film Festival 2025 was an unforgettable experience, but the event was notably lacking on many levels.
The fresh mountain air, the eclectic mix of film enthusiasts, and the promise of groundbreaking films should have made it a highlight of my year.
Yet, as I navigated the familiar chaos of the festival, I couldn’t help but feel that something significant was missing — the presence of Hollywood.
Sundance has long been known for independent filmmakers showcasing their work, alongside A-list actors who lent their names and creativity to these passion projects.
But this year, the absence of Hollywood’s brightest stars was majorly noticable.
The particularly disheartening aspect of the turnout is the potential impact on the filmmakers themselves.
Sundance has historically been a launching pad for careers, with A-list involvement often serving as a stamp of legitimacy for smaller projects.
While I did get to catch up with celebrities like – Dave Franco, John Hamm, Jessica Betts, Neicy Nash, Hannah Stocking, and Sarah Jessica Parker – they all seemed to be in the same underwhelmed mood, except for Franco…he was hyped.
I am hopeful for years to come at the event, but honestly I can’t say I am optimistic.
