Comedian Bill Burr wasn’t laughing recently when Howie Mandel forced him into having a “family reunion” with his alleged half-brother, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan.
Mandel invited Burr on to the Jan. 21 episode of his podcast, “Howie Mandel Does Stuff,” but didn’t tell Burr there would be a surprise guest.
During the episode, Mandel brought on Corgan, who, back in November, appeared on the podcast and said he and Burr might be half-brothers. Mandel then decided to bring him back for Burr’s interview ― without telling the comedian.
As Corgan joined the interview, Burr multitasked, shaking the musician’s hand while telling Mandel, “You’re an asshole,” for the ambush.
Corgan said Mandel gave the impression that Burr would be OK with the meeting, but the actor replied, “That’s what he does.”
Although Corgan offered to leave, Burr decided to go with the hand that was dealt to him.
During Corgan’s November appearance on the podcast, he said that his stepmother told him about 10 years ago that it’s possible Burr “might be one of the children that your father sired in his days being a traveling musician.”
The 57-year-old Corgan also remembered his dad telling him about a half-brother named Bill born around the same time as he was. Burr is 56.
Although Corgan admitted having doubts about being Burr’s half-brother during the November interview, Burr hinted during their forced meeting that maybe it’s not that far-fetched.
“He was a piece of shit,” he said about his father. “He had two kids this close together, and he gave them the same fucking name? He thinks it’s different because he’s Billy and I’m Bill. That’s how he told the difference.”
Burr was mostly angry at Mandel for setting things up the way he did, but he also expressed frustration at Corgan.
“Did you ever think the fact that I never told that story [meant] that maybe you shouldn’t?” he asked the singer.
During the encounter, Burr noted he has nothing against Corgan but admitted that the speculation brings up negative emotions.
In an effort to lighten the mood, Corgan joked, “The fact that he said he can’t sing, I think, disproves that we’re related, ’cause I’m not funny, so … it goes both ways.”
When Burr again asked Corgan why he felt the need to tell the story, Corgan said he shared it with Mandel privately only for him to insist the story be shared publicly.
Burr then accused Mandel of setting up the encounter for the sake of “ratings,” adding, “What was supposed to happen? Are we going to go play catch? We’re both in our 50s.”
Corgan then told Mandel, “This is some Dr. Phil shit you got going on here.”
After all of this, Burr had to admit he did forge a bit of a bond with Corgan as a result of the surprise meeting.

“I think we’re kind of on the same page in thinking you’re kind of a dick right now,” Burr told Mandel.
