Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word “immersion” as “providing, involving or characterized by deep absorption or immersion in something.”
In the case of the Thunder River Theatre Company, the goal of their new music series “Pink to Black,” which kicks off tonight in Carbondale, is to create a totally unique experience for concert goers.
“Pink to Black is a brand new immersive music experience where we combine the power of music and the magic of theater to transform TRTC’s black box theater into an epic experience for each and every concert we produce,” said Missy Moore, artistic director of TRTC. “In each show in the series, the audience will experience the music in different ways. It’s a marriage of both music and theater. If you come tonight, the stage is going to be in one area, the theater is going to be activated thematically in a different way compared to when you come back in March and April for the next two shows in the series which will have a totally different theme.”
Doors will open at 6 p.m., and DJ Pinto will get the party started at 7 p.m. The Triptides from Los Angeles will start at 9 p.m. It’s a 21-and-over event.
TRCC has partnered on the series with El Dorado, the bar on Main Street in Carbondale that, according to its website, is “suspended in a Western psychedelic allure and the heartbeat of a bohemian 1920s’ lounge.”
Chris Rullet, creative director of El Dorado, is involved with choosing the bands that come to Mountain Fair at the end of July. He said the “Pink to Black” series evolved out of a conversation he had at the bar with Moore back in June.
“We have all sorts of events that go on at El Dorado, but we wanted to do something bigger than what we could do at El Dorado. We all came up with this idea for transforming the theatre into something really cool and integrating it into live music,” Rullet said.
El Dorado mixologists will be pouring craft cocktails developed specifically for each concert.
Rullet said the name for the series is a nod both to the black box theater and a reference to the Roaring Fork River and the section of the river from Carbondale down to Iron Bridge that is known as “Pink to Black.”
The “Pink to Black” series is TRTC’s first effort to use its theater for events other than local theater productions. Currently, TRTC hosts productions by their own company and a children’s theater group, Stage of Life Theatre Company.
“We’re never going to lose sight of the fact that we are a producing house and we will always have theater here, but the venue itself offers so much for the community as a theater in the heart of the creative district,” Moore said. “We’ve been asking ourselves, ‘how can you activate the actual venue in myriad ways, from a dance party to our next main stage show to a concert series?’”
The Triptides are a psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles. They were one of the headliners at Mountain Fair last summer. According to their website, the band “traverses a kaleidoscopic musical landscape of psychedelic rock, Laurel Canyon folk, and spaced-out jazz pop. Stoners, trippers, and lovers alike will be transported to a sweet and familiar place, lifted by chiming guitars, hypnotic drums, glittering pianos, and hallucinogenic fuzz.”
The “Pink to Black” series has two more dates on the TRTC winter calendar: March 22 and April 5.
“What people can come to expect is that we will activate the theater in a different way to highlight the music that the different bands create,” Rullet said. “So for Triptides, it’s going to be kind of like a psychedelic surfer world. We could possibly have a tiki lounge for the next one. I definitely want people walking away saying that they enjoyed the music and also had experienced an event more than just going to a concert.”
Moore said she hopes to surprise the community with tonight’s event.
“I hope if there are returning patrons to TRTC that they’re going to be like, ‘Wow! I had no idea that a black box can achieve something like this.’ And I hope that for everybody in this valley that doesn’t know we exist, now they’ll know.”
