Princess Beatrice’s second daughter and Prince Harry’s youngest child Lilibet share a touching connection.
Beatrice, 36, gave birth to Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi on January 22 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. The tot weighed 4lb 5oz.
Baby Athena’s second name, Elizabeth, is said to be a touching nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II, her great-grandmother. It is a middlename the youngster also shares with her older sister, Beatrice’s first daughter Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi.
Beatrice’s cousin Harry also paid tribute to his grandmother with the naming of his second child, Princess Lilibet. Harry and Meghan chose the name because his grandmother was nicknamed Lilibet by the Royal Family.
Lilibet’s middle name, Diana, is a tribute to her “beloved late grandmother,” the Sussexes said when they announced her birth.
Queen Elizabeth II was said to have been nickamed Lilibet when she was two, because she struggled to pronounce her full name.
Her father, the-then Duke of York, began referring to his eldest daughter as Lilibet, something he continued to do even after he became King.
The name is then said to have been used by Prince Philip, who also referred to his wife as the pet name “cabbage”.
Beatrice‘s bond with the Queen has been visible over the years, with Prince Andrew‘s daughter once saying her mum, Sarah Ferguson and her grandmother were her role models.
“I have two role models, my mother and my grandmother,” she told HELLO!. “They are both formidable women. I think having female role models is incredibly important and I am very lucky that I happen to be related to these two incredible women.”
The Queen meanwhile is said to have been angered by Harry’s choice of name.
In Robert Hardman’s new biography, Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story, which was previously serialised in the Daily Mail, one member of staff had said that the late Queen was “as angry as I’d ever seen her” after receiving the news.
At the time, Harry and Meghan however said they had asked permission from Queen Elizabeth to use the monniker. They said they would not have used the name for their daughter if the late Queen had not been “supportive”.
The spokesperson said at the time: “The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.
“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
Young Athena has been born several weeks prematurely with Beatrice now said to be at home with husband Edo and children Wolfie and Sienna.
The King and Queen have been informed and are delighted, Buckingham Palace said.
Buckingham Palace said: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday January 22 at 12.57pm, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.
“The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces. Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.”
