When he opened the Blue Moon Saloon & Guesthouse 24 years ago, Mark Falgout dreamed of operating a venue for people like himself — lovers of music, travel and community.
“I couldn’t be on the road as much as I wanted anymore, so I created a space for travelers,” said the Lafayette businessman. “It’s been a space for people to experience Lafayette’s culture.”
Travelers, musicians, tourists and locals have flocked to the Blue Moon ever since. Located at 215 E. Convent St. in Lafayette’s historic Freetown neighborhood, the venue hosts a popular Cajun jam on Wednesday evenings as well as shows throughout the week. The guest rooms, bar and dance floor are especially popular during regional events like Mardi Gras, Festival International and Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.
Last week, the Blue Moon Saloon & Guesthouse was listed for sale, for $1.2 million. The sale includes the main property and adjacent short term rentals, and all of the business revenue streams, according to Falgout. He says that business will continue as usual through the transition, and all shows and room rentals are still booked.
The Blue Moon is also continuing to take inquiries and book future trips, shows and events.
“Ideally our goal is to pass the business on to someone to build onto what we’ve created,” says Falgout. “We believe we’ve created something sustainable that has a lot of growth potential. The timing is right. You can’t control what happens when you sell something, but it’s been a labor of love for the community. I hope it will continue to be a labor of love for someone else.”
Life transitions, and Falgout’s changing family needs, prompted the sale. While he will continue to own Warehouse 535, a nearby wedding and event venue on Garfield Street, Falgout says that he and his wife are looking forward to taking on new projects and experiences as their daughters graduate and leave the nest.
He says, “It’s been a huge part of my life. I met my wife and had a family there. Now, we want to get out there again and do more traveling.”
The Blue Moon Saloon real estate listing states that “trained staff and current owner are happy to share their experience and stay on to ensure a smooth transition if needed.” According to Falgout, there has been substantial interest and multiple showings so far — but for now, the plan is to continue normal business operations through what may be a long term transition process.
