Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, her spokesperson has said.
Marianne is known for her hits like As Tears Go By, which reached the Top 10 in the UK in 1964. She also had starring roles in films including 1968’s The Girl on a Motorcycle.
A statement released by her spokesperson read: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull.
“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”
Her cause of death is yet to be confirmed. The songstress grew close to Mick Jagger in the 60s after they worked together on her hit As Tears Go By.
Marianna rose to fame in the 60s as one of the leading female artists of the British invasion, releasing several hits.
She also had a highly publicized relationship with Mick Jagger from 1966 to 1970, which often threatened to overshadow her own talents.
Due to her romance with Jagger, she became a frequent target of tabloids, not least during the infamous drugs bust at Richards’ Sussex mansion in 1967, when her singing career ground to a halt.
Speaking about the incident in 2008 to the Independent, she said: “They hurt my feelings, all those busts and harassment.
“I’m not saying I behaved that well, but I didn’t really do anything that terrible either.”
As an actress, she made her theatre debut in a 1967 stage adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
Since then, she has starred in films including Sofia Coppola’s 2006 biopic Maria Antoinette as well as 2007’s tragic comedy Irina Palm.
In a 2009 interview with director Mike Figg, Marianna explained how being exposed to scrutiny as a woman in the public eye had a lasting impact on her sense of self, to the point that she couldn’t bear to see herself in photographs.
She said: “When you are 18, 19, 20, you’re used to being photographed all the time, in a certain was.
“So, the narcissism becomes almost out of control. And the way that young women are photographed, they become addicted to this feedback of the image. I’m still dealing with it.”
