Prince Harry‘s moment when he broke down in tears during a speech at an awards ceremony for sick children which allegedly caused a 72-hour argument with his brother, Prince William, has gone viral on social media.
The Duke of Sussex, who became patron of WellChild in 2007, has been attending the charity’s awards ceremony every year as it’s one of the few patronages he kept after stepping down as a senior royal in 2020.
Wellchild is a charity in the UK that provides support for seriously ill young people.
In October 2019, the duke attended the ceremony in London while his brother was in Pakistan and gave an emotional speech during which he teared up and paused while recounting the feeling of knowing he was going to become a parent during the previous year’s ceremony.
The moment has resurfaced after a user on TikTok uploaded a video, along with other moments of Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana, with the caption: “Prince Harry thinks about [his] mother, Diana.” The user regularly uploads videos of the late Princess of Wales.
Harry’s poignant moment went viral on the platform, with the video accumulating nearly 30,000 likes.
Fans rushed to the comment section to praise the duke, with one saying: “His mother is with him all the way. The Lord is protecting him and his family.”
A second one wrote: “Prince Harry , you have your mums blessings and she is watching over you. Stay strong stay blessed,” while another one added: “God bless him. Well lest pray he will always be as strong as his mother.”
Four years after the incident, Harry spoke about his speech in his memoir, Spare – released in 2023.
Harry wrote: “I walked onstage, began my brief remarks, and caught sight of Meg’s face. I thought back to a year ago, when she and I attended this event just weeks after taking that home pregnancy test.
“We’d been filled with hope, and worry, like all expectant parents, and now we had a healthy little boy at home. But these parents and children hadn’t been so lucky. Gratitude and sympathy converged in my heart, and I choked up.
“Unable to get the words out, I held the lectern tight and leaned forward. The presenter, who’d been a friend of my mother, stepped over and gave my shoulder a rub. It helped, as did the burst of applause, which gave me a moment to restart my vocal cords.”
But the duke added that he allegedly received a “text from Willy” shortly after, which later turned into a major argument.
The duke alleged: “He was in Pakistan on tour. He said I was clearly struggling, and he was worried about me.
“I thanked him for his concern, assured him I was fine. I’d become emotional in front of a roomful of sick kids and their folks just after becoming a father myself—nothing abnormal in that.
“He said I wasn’t well. He said again that I needed help. I reminded him that I was doing therapy. In fact, he’d recently told me he wanted to accompany me to a session because he suspected I was being “brainwashed.” Then come, I said. It will be good for you. Good for us. He never came.”
Harry added: “His strategy was patently obvious: I was unwell, which meant I was unwise. As if all my behaviour needed to be called into question.”
The prince then claimed that the exchanged “turned into an argument, which stretched over seventy-two hours” and added that they had never had a fight like that over text before.
He said: “Angry, but also miles apart, as if we were speaking different languages. Now and then I realised that my worst fear was coming true: after months of therapy, after working hard to become more aware, more independent, I was a stranger to my older brother. He could no longer relate to me—tolerate me.
“I saved the texts. I have them still. I read them sometimes, with sadness, with confusion, thinking: How did we ever get there?
“In his final texts, Willy wrote that he loved me. That he cared for me deeply. That he would do whatever is needed to help me.”
