Billy Crystal set the tone for the FireAid benefit concert Thursday night, blending heartfelt emotion with humor after losing his home to the Los Angeles fires.
“You’ll be hearing from a number of people who were tragically affected by these fires, and I was one of them,” Crystal said.
The beloved actor and comedian revealed that he was still wearing the same clothes he had on when he lost his home—clothes he ended up wearing for a week.
He recounted the moment he returned to the devastation, saying he fell to his knees and wailed.
“That reminded me that even in your worst pain, it’s okay to laugh,” he said, drawing a mix of tears and applause from the audience.
The alt band Green Day kicked off the show with an emotional message.
“We’re still alive, this is California, and we’re all in this together. From the bottom of our hearts, we love you Los Angeles, and we got your back no matter what,” Green Day’s singer Billie Joe Armstrong stated.
Outside the venues, lines remained long throughout the night, but no major incidents were reported.
