As celebrities and TikTokers continue to hop on the viral Nicki Minaj “pose” challenge — a recreation of her iconic squatting stance from the 2013 “High School” music video — the Queen herself has officially stepped in to (attempt) to show how it’s really done.
The global icon took to social media to share behind-the-scenes footage of her trying out the viral trend that has seen many balance themselves on the most outrageous items, although Minaj never did that in the original video. Her Chanel dress, however, had other plans for her. While the Pink Friday star gave fans a sneak peek at her attempt, she quickly let it be known that her ensemble prevented her from completing the act.
“Dear Barbz, about that pose… ummm this Chanel dress was just a tad shorter than I thought & the thongs definitely didn’t help,” she wrote in the caption. “Didn’t want to make it explicit.” She promised to give the trend another shot with a less revealing outfit, adding, “Ten toes. Ima put on a diff outfit that won’t show so much skin & do it again for you guys later.”
Minaj’s attempt came just as the challenge recently turned from fun to dangerous. Over in Russia, a 32-year-old content creator ended up with a fractured spine after recreating the pose for her first-ever blog shoot. Mariana Barutkina, who had just given birth eight weeks prior, tried the challenge on top of her kitchen island while balancing in stilettos and standing atop two cans of baby formula and a saucepan.
Despite having someone nearby to assist, Barutkina lost her balance and came crashing down — all caught on camera. In the now-viral Instagram video, she captioned the moment (translated from Russian), “TREND OR WHOLE BELL?,” sharing that she had suffered a T9 “compression bending uncomplicated fracture” of the spine.
“I decided to start blogging, the first content shooting – and here I am leaving the doctor diagnosed with a fracture,” she wrote. “The irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.”
While celebs like Ciara, Angela Simmons, and Porsha Williams have successfully completed the challenge with ease, Barutkina’s incident serves as a reminder that everything viral isn’t always safe.
