Happy Days star Don Most is best known for his role as Ralph Malph in the classic ABC sitcom, but in recent years, he’s made the transition to a Colorado jazz musician. Four decades after the hit comedy series ended its 11-season run, the actor, 71, performs a show called Donny Most Sings and Swings at clubs in Colorado.
True to Happy Days form, Most performs classics from the Great American Songbook. But his move into the music world wasn’t a totally new thing. In a new interview, Most told The Denver Post that music was always his “first love,” and that as a young teen, he performed in a vaudeville troupe in summer camp.
“I did a bunch of musical theater over the years, and sometimes I’d get occasions to sing on telethons and charity events,” Most told the outlet. “But it wasn’t until about 10 years ago when it hit me, because I was still listening to jazz standards and the legendary artists who performed them. I said, ‘If I’m ever going to do it, I’d better start,’ because I wasn’t 20 anymore.”
“I put together a show the way I always wanted to do, working with a musical director I knew from the East Coast,” he added. “We tried it out at a jazz club in L.A., and it went great.”
On his Instagram page, Most revealed that in June and July, he performed with the 17-piece band, The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, for several gigs in Denver.
“I love performing live, whether it’s acting in theater or singing in clubs,” he told The Post.
Don Most ‘Always Wanted to Sing’
Most rarely utilized his singing chops on Happy Days—he played keyboards in the gang’s Arnolds’ Drive-In rock band— but he pleasantly surprised fans when he performed the Al Jolson/Saul Chapin-penned “The Anniversary Song” in the 1976 episode ‘They Shoot Fonzies Don’t They?”
Most told Remind magazine that he graduated from Erasmus Hall High School, the same prestigious Brooklyn school that music legends Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and Clive Davis attended.
“In terms of music, they had a program called Sing, where each grade would put on an original show with music. It was a competition that I participated in for two of the years that I went there,” he said. “I always knew I wanted to sing.”
In addition to his live performances, Most has released the albums D Most Mostly Swinging and Swinging Down The Chimney Tonight.
Most also still works as an actor and producer, per his IMDb page.
