Rarely-Seen Pic of ’80s ‘Dallas’ TV Icons Has Fans in Their Feelings originally appeared on Parade.
As fans of the iconic TV series Dallas know, Pamela Barnes Ewing and J.R. Ewing — played by Victoria Principal and the late Larry Hagman, respectively — had a mostly contentious relationship onscreen. But as Principal proved with a rarely-seen throwback pic, the actors had a very different dynamic behind the scenes.
Principal, 75, took to Instagram this week to share an undated photo of herself and Hagman on the set of Dallas. In the snap, a smiling Hagman stood with one arm around an equally cheerful-looking Principal, who held an unidentified baby in her arms (probably the infant who played her character’s son, Christopher).
“Hanging out with Larry Hagman on the set of Dallas. Or.. did JR & Pam have a.. Baby!!!?” Principal wrote in her caption.
Commenters were quick to wax nostalgic over the sweet image.
“Just watching Dallas every evening at the moment on my channel ! So nice to see it again !! Honestly I am enjoying so much!! Bless you Victoria ❤️❤️❤️” one person gushed, with a second adding, “What a beautiful photo, you three look stunning! You haven’t changed a bit, pretty Lady ❤️ and little ‘Christopher’ is so precious, those chubby cheeks, oh God
You have the most beautiful smile, I adore and admire you so much ❤️ Sending you all the love.”
“Aah, what a lovely photo Victoria. I’m sure it brings back happy memories for you but it also stirs memories of watching you both in Dallas…great times!❤️” declared another fan.
in a 2023 interview with People, Principal reflected on the nature of her friendship with Hagman, describing how the late actor would make her laugh during stressful moments.
“Whenever Larry and I had a particularly intense scene, just the two of us as JR and Pam, he would sometimes surprise me by delivering his most sinister line in a Groucho Marx impression. Larry Hagman, playing JR, playing Groucho Marx,” she recalled, adding, “Which always made the entire scene hilarious to me, and impossible for me not to break character and laugh.”
“And my response, my uncontrollable laughter, caused him to light up with such mischievous accomplishment and delight,” the actress continued. “I don’t think the public is aware of how perceptive and thoughtful Larry was to other people’s feelings and situations. Larry liked to play ‘the clown.’ But beneath that persona, was a deeply sensitive man who cloaked himself in the role of the jester.”
