Alex Warren understands that not everyone has loved, loves, or will love his style of music — and he’s totally fine with that. On Friday, as he was named MTV’s Push Artist of the month, the “Ordinary” star opened up about the quick start of his career, and how much his music has resonated with certain audiences.

“I started doing somewhat okay, and I felt like a lot of questions people were asking were like ‘Who the heck is this kid?’,” Warren told MTV. “And I think that’s the thing, this is not everyone’s cup of tea, I do not expect everyone to like this music, but if you do, I hope it helps you, you know, and if you don’t, still hope it helps you.”

Some people have connected so much with his music — and specifically his hit, “Ordinary” — that they are using it in weddings.

“I think it’s really cool that people are starting to associate that song with their wedding,” Warren said. “And that’s something forever, that’s something you’re gonna think about forever, that’s such a crucial moment in your life and I’m so blessed that people are allowing me to be a part of that. And so it’s been really cool to kinda just see the reaction but also what they’re applying that song to.”

While discussing his MTV Push Artist title, he was quick to admit that he wasn’t “a huge music guy in the beginning,” and that he mostly listened to the songs his dad liked before he died. That music has become a large influence on his artistry today.

“I would listen to a lot of Rascal Flats, Train, Coldplay, and a lot of my music taste even today is a lot of the stuff I listen to on the radio back in the day,” Warren said. “A lot of people, when they listen to my music today, say ‘Wow, he has so many influences from the 2010s,’ and I’m like yes, it’s the music I listen to today.”

Warren released his debut album, You’ll Be Alright, Kid — a two-part album that includes “Bloodline” with Jelly Roll, “Ordinary,” and “On My Mind” with Rosé — in mid-July. He also recently released a live duet rendition of “Ordinary” with Luke Combs.
