Porvoon Butchers extend unbeaten streak with commanding win over Wasa Royals

The Porvoon Butchers (8-0) solidified their grip on the Maple League’s top spot, dispatching the Wasa Royals (4-4) 27-7 in a defensively charged contest at Porvoon Central Field, though the Royals’ resilience kept the score closer than the home side’s dominance suggested.

Butchers’ methodical offense breaks through late
A sluggish start saw the first quarter end scoreless, but Porvoon erupted in the second quarter with three unanswered touchdowns. Running back Christian Powell (19 carries, 99 yards, 1 TD) opened the scoring with a 12-yard rush, capitalizing on a Royals fumble. Quarterback Christian Arrambide (12/20, 212 yards, 3 TDs) then connected with tight end Mikko Seppänen on a 1-yard score, followed by a highlight-reel 51-yard touchdown pass to receiver Luukas Eerola, who outleaped two defenders. Eerola added a 55-yard score in the third quarter, finishing with 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Despite their dominance, the Butchers left points unclaimed, missing two extra kicks and a fourth-quarter field goal.

Royals’ defense shines amid offensive struggles
The Wasa Royals, held to 198 total yards, struggled offensively but showcased defensive tenacity. Linebacker Raul Khalifa (2 tackles) maintained his lead in the Matti Lindholm Trophy race (39 total tackles), while the unit limited Porvoon, averaging 45.6 points a game, to a season-low 27 points. Quarterback Elias Haapamäki, who avoided turnovers until he threw a late interception, orchestrated a 16-yard touchdown pass to Veeti Mäkelä in the fourth quarter to avert a shutout. Receiver Tom Suoste and running back Ami Lindfors each contributed 42 yards, but the Royals converted just 5 of 11 third downs.

Defensive standouts define physical contest
Porvoon linebacker Jalen Todd dominated with 8 tackles, extending his league lead to 67. His efforts anchored a defense that stifled Wasa’s ground game (85 net rushing yards) and sacked Haapamäki twice. The Butchers’ defensive line, led by Mikko Vento’s unit, pressured Haapamäki relentlessly, forcing hurried throws and a critical third-quarter interception.

Playoff implications
The Butchers remain on track for a perfect regular season, while the Royals cling to fourth place in the standings. Wasa must rebound against the Tampere Saints to stay in postseason contention, while Porvoon faces the Kuopio Steelers in a Week 8 showdown of Maple League heavyweights.
