Now, thanks to Selena’s recent appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, we finally got the adorable backstory on how these two became inseparable.
“Taylor [Swift] and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” the Only Murders in the Building star said on the August 7 episode, which—pause for early 2000s flashbacks—reminds me this friendship was born at the height of Disney Channel-era chaos.
“I dated Nick and she dated Joe,” she continued. “And everything was, it was cute, we were young. We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We don’t know what we were doing. She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet.”
She also painted the full Y2K picture, recalling how she was 15 and Taylor was around 18 at the time. “It was the crazy curly Taylor and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up.”
Selena added that their bond forged in the flames of teen heartbreak. “We bonded over the breakup, as girls do,” Selena said. “And then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after and here we are now 16 years later.”
Most recently, Selena shared a few snaps from her 33rd birthday party and yes, there was Taylor, balloons in the background, standing proudly by her bestie.
