K-Pop, the high-energy pop music genre from South Korea, has long been a global force. But now, it has officially captured the hearts of Gen Alpha, the kids and tweens born in the 2010s and early 2020s. A new survey from Zigazoo asked over 4,500 Gen Alpha participants in the U.S. to share their favorite music genres, and the results found that K-Pop is one of their top picks.
Here’s what the poll discovered, why K-Pop is so popular among kids, and how this generation is shaping music trends.
Breaking Down the Numbers
When asked to pick their top genre, here’s how Gen Alpha responded:
The findings are interesting, K-Pop ranked second overall with one in four Gen Alpha kids saying it’s their favorite, despite much of the music not being in English. But those who have seen K-Pop stars and listened to their music might understand the affinity younger generations have with the genre. The music is catchy and packed and shared through energetic music videos, viral dance choreography, and very active online fan communities.
Why Kids Are Obsessed with K-Pop
K-Pop resonates deeply with a lot of kids today. Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have only accelerated its popularity, allowing Gen Alpha fans to discover and share new artists instantly. Many are introduced to the genre through trending clips, fan-made edits, and live performances that rack up millions of views.
Parents have even taken to TikTok and Instagram to share their surprise at how invested their kids are in K-Pop. In one video with over 340,000 likes, a mom films her daughter opening a present filled with K-Pop merch and a printed concert ticket at the bottom. The child immediately bursts into tears and hugs her mom. One comment reads, “I love when parents pay attention to what their kids like.”
In another video, a parent looks shocked as her daughter dances to every lyric in a K-Pop song. The mom writes over the video, “Is anyone else’s child obsessed with K-Pop?”
K-Pop’s popularity has even reached Netflix. The streaming platform’s animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters became their most watched animated original ever this summer, reaching 158.8 million views by early August. Videos of kids, ranging from age 3 (yes, 3) to 17, watching and shimmying to the film’s music have flooded TikTok and Instagram.
Gen Alpha’s Influence
Gen Alpha is the first generation to be fully born into the streaming era, and it shows. Unlike past generations, their playlists aren’t limited by what’s playing on the radio or what their family listens to. An American tween can easily have a Seoul-based girl group on the same playlist as Taylor Swift or the Encanto soundtrack.
Being tuned into your child’s interests, no matter how different they may seem, offers a valuable opportunity for connection. K-Pop introduces kids to diverse cultures, languages, and creative expression, all while encouraging community.
That said, as with any fandom, it’s important to keep an eye on online activity and ensure kids engage safely. Encourage open conversations about the music and content they love, and consider exploring some K-Pop together. As one commenter wrote under the mom’s video surprising her daughter with concert tickets, “To be loved is to be seen. This girl is lucky to have parents like you.”
