Less than a year after dropping their acclaimed October 2024 album Coma, masked Portuguese black metal collective Gaerea have surprised fans with a brand-new single, “Submerged”. The track arrives without the fanfare of a new album announcement — but it does follow the band’s reveal of their summer trek, ominously titled the Su8m3r91ng Summer Tour, hinting that something fresh was lurking beneath the surface.

Interestingly, “Submerged” strays into unexpected territory for the group. While Gaerea‘s signature atmospheric black metal remains intact in places, the song leans heavily into metalcore-inspired rhythmsatmospheres, creating a hybrid that might catch longtime listeners off guard. It’s a bold, modern twist for a band known more for sprawling, emotional extremity than tight, groove-driven aggression.

Whether this is a one-off experiment or a preview of a broader stylistic shift remains to be seen — but one thing’s certain: Gaerea aren’t afraid to shake things up, even while riding the momentum of Coma.

You can also catch Gaerea on tour with Orbit Culture and Atlas this October through November. Get your tickets here.
