Marvel ruined another beloved superhero property. It looks like Daredevil’s resurrection is already dead. Star Charlie Cox let slip that the currently filming season of Daredevil: Born Again is not the second; it’s the last. The show has already been canceled.
Here’s the full quote from Cox: “There’s something that we do in this final season that doesn’t exist in the comics. So it is unique to our show and I’m pretty excited about that.”
Anyone who tried to watch Daredevil: Born Again is likely unsurprised. The plot was so drowned in activist political ideology that it ruined all the show’s characters. That outdated, cringey, trust fund college kid approach to human nature might have been bearable if the show had delivered great action sequences. That was something the Netflix version of the series, which was a follow-up to, was brilliant at. But Born Again was terrible there too, serving up some of the most hilariously bad stunt work I’ve seen on a modern superhero program.
The 2015 Netflix version of Daredevil felt raw and real. It never used CGI or special effects, when it was possible to actually pick someone up and throw them at a wall. That series’s most famous sequence involved Charlie Cox in full Daredevil mode, fighting his way down a hallway full of angry henchmen. No punches were pulled, and it’s certain that everyone involved in filming it was bruised and battered when it was done. In Born Again, you can see that none of the punches connect, and the CGI overuse drips off every lazy frame of the show.
Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again
Daredevil: Born Again was stillborn. It’s an insult to everyone who loved the original series, which was created before Marvel took over and ruined it. If you didn’t hear much outcry, it’s only because fans have become used to Marvel productions being absolutely terrible.
The show’s first season viewer numbers reflected that. It never charted in the Nielsen ratings because no one watched. It’s likely the only reason a second season will happen is because Marvel committed to it before they got the ratings numbers for the first one.
Charlie Cox in costume as Daredevil for Born Again
As far as most Daredevil fans are concerned, the show ended when Marvel got the rights back from Netflix. Daredevil: Born To Suck does not exist.
