Leonardo DiCaprio Surprises Fans By Revealing the ‘Biggest Regret’ of His 36 Year Career originally appeared on Parade.
It’s been almost 30 years since Leonardo DiCaprio turned down a chance to star in 1997’s critically acclaimed drama, Boogie Nights, but still, the decision continues to haunt him to this very day.
In the latest cover story for Esquire magazine, DiCaprio was interviewed by Boogie Nights’ filmmaker, Paul Thomas Anderson, who recently directed the Wolf of Wall Street actor in the soon-to-be-released comedy drama, One Battle After Another.
When asked if DiCaprio had any regrets from his larger career, the Academy Award-winning actor candidly revealed that his single biggest regret had to be rejecting an offer for Anderson’s drama film nearly three decades ago.
“I’ll say it even though you’re here: My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights,” DiCaprio told Anderson. “It was a profound movie of my generation. I can’t imagine anyone but Mark [Wahlberg] in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. It’s ironic that you’re the person asking that question, but it’s true.”
As DiCaprio said in the interview, the role he was originally offered for Boogie Nights ultimately went to Mark Wahlberg, earning the actor significant acclaim among mainstream audiences at the time.
Often hailed as one of the greatest movies of the late 20th century, Boogie Nights specifically follows Wahlberg’s Eddie Adams: a young dishwasher who finds an unexpected career in the adult film industry in 1970s California.
While it wound up taking 30 years for DiCaprio and Anderson to work together, the Titanic star said he’d long held a desire to collaboration with Anderson, especially given the interesting material he found in the script for One Battle After Another.
“I know One Battle After Another has been on your desk for a long time,” DiCaprio said to Anderson. “It was a personal story for you in a lot of ways and certainly pertinent to the world that we’re living in right now.”
“But ultimately, wanting to do this movie was pretty simple: I’ve been wanting to work with you—Paul—for something like twenty years now,” the prolific actor continued, “and I loved this idea of the washed-up revolutionary trying to erase his past and disappear and try and live some sort of normal life raising his daughter.”
