DWTS Pros Rally Around 1 of Their Own After Unexpected Announcement originally appeared on Parade.
Dancing With the Starsjudge Derek Hough has landed a major gig. The ballroom pro is going to be the new host of Extra, effectively replacing Billy Bush. The news was confirmed on August 13, just about one month ahead of the DWTS Season 34 premiere.
Hough shared the announcement on Instagram where he received a great deal of love and support from his Dancing With the Stars family.
“LFG,” wrote Hough’s sister and DWTS co-host, Julianne Hough.
“YESSIR,” added longtime DWTS cast member and Derek’s best friend, Mark Ballas.
“Congratulations,” saidDancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, adding three clapping emoji.
Derek also received congratulatory messages from ballroom pros Val Chmerkovskiy and Sasha Farber.
Dozens of fans have also reacted to the news, both on Instagram and other social networking sites, such as Reddit. For the most part, many fans were surprised by the news, given that Derek already seems to have a lot of plates spinning.
In addition to judging the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars, Derek will also be going on tour with Ovation — a dance convention and competition that was founded by Derek and Julianne. Beyond that, Derek is set to become a father for the first time. He and his wife, Hayley Erbert, shared the big news with the world on July 22.
“We can’t believe the biggest thing to happen to us could be so small,” Erbert captioned a joint Instagram post at the time.
Nevertheless, Derek seems really excited for his new hosting gig.
“The ballroom has been my stage, my home, and my launchpad. Now, I’m stepping into an exciting new spotlight as the host of Extra. I’m truly looking forward to collaborating with this incredible team, diving into this next creative chapter, and connecting with fans and audiences in a whole new way. It’s an honor to join a show that’s been a cornerstone of entertainment news for over 30 years — and I’m ready to help lead it into a bold, fresh new era for Season 32 and beyond,” he said in a statement.
