Ron Howard Makes Unexpected Comment About On-Screen Father Andy Griffith  originally appeared on Parade.

Famed directorRon Howard is opening up about his relationship with his Andy Griffith Show co-star, the late Andy Griffith.

While speaking to Vulture in August 2025, Howard briefly discussed playing Mayberry sheriff Andy Taylor’s (Griffith) son, Opie, on the beloved CBS sitcom, which ran for eight seasons until 1960, per Remind Magazine. According to Howard, fans shouldn’t be fooled by the show’s simple premise of following members of a sleepy North Carolina town.

“The environment was super-creative. The show looks so simple, but it was all about this very precise problem-solving. I would see scenes suddenly become funny or work. Because it wasn’t done in front of an audience, and even though we were working quickly, what Andy wanted was a truthfulness. But it still required perfect timing and exactly the right tone,” said Howard during the interview.

In addition, Howard said Griffith wasn’t happy about critics’ response to the series.

“Andy was always annoyed that the media didn’t really embrace the show. In season five, I remember him saying, ‘How long do we have to be in the top ten for them to understand why this show works?’ And then he started reading the Variety review out loud, and it wasn’t very flattering,” said Howard to the publication.

During a June 2024 episode of Conan O’Brien‘s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, Howard discussed the lasting success of The Andy Griffith Show. Howard explained that the show was “always stressing character.” In addition, he said Griffith didn’t like slapstick comedy that was often seen in other popular shows in the 1950s.

“Andy would kill jokes if they were too broad. And he kept saying that the south is plenty funny on its own without having to reach and do slapstick,” said Howard during the podcast interview.

Howard, who also starred in popular projects like Happy Days and American Graffiti before pivoting to directing, said the actors on The Andy Griffith Show felt free to make suggestions for their characters while on set.

“How lucky was I to grow up in that situation, where the environment was set up for actors to not improvise but to participate, make suggestions,” said Howard.
