A recent survey has disclosed what Americans really think about Sydney Sweeney’s appearance in American Eagle’s newest campaign.
The Anyone But You star recently featured in a commercial for the clothing brand, donning an all-denim outfit while reclining and delivering the line, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,” before adding, “My jeans are blue.”
The advertisement sparked a flurry of reactions, including criticism from high-profile personalities such as President Donald Trump, Piers Morgan, and Lizzo, who ridiculed the video through parody content.
Social media users also weighed in, with one TikTok creator stating, “Hey American Eagle, now do black and brown women. Because black and brown women also have great genes that they inherit from their parents. Did you know that?”
Another activist was filmed outside an American Eagle location, urging her audience to “Boycott American Eagle. Boycott the s— out of them.”
The research was carried out between Aug. 9 and 11 among 1,635 adult participants. The survey revealed a gender divide in perceptions of the ad campaign, with 49% of men viewing it as a savvy marketing move.
The ad also resonated differently across age brackets, with 34% of voters aged 65 and above appreciating its cleverness, while only 13% found it offensive.
Politically, Republicans were more likely to praise the campaign, with 57% of conservative respondents endorsing it as clever. Despite survey participants opting for anonymity, political voices have not shied away from commenting on the campaign.
On the Ruthless podcast, Vice President JD Vance weighed in, criticizing the Democrats‘ approach, “Did you learn nothing from the November 2024 election?”
Vance continued his critique by saying, “The lesson they’ve apparently taken is, ‘We’re going to attack people as Nazis for thinking Sydney Sweeney is beautiful.'”
While Sydney Sweeney herself has remained silent on the ad’s controversy, American Eagle issued a statement clarifying their stance, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
