Lana Del Rey is coming in hot with her new song snippet. The singer teased the unnamed track in an Instagram video where she’s seen listening to it as she drives and delivers pointed lyrics. “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post,” Del Rey sings, the biting lyrics juxtaposing the soft vocals and keys.
Del Rey simply captioned the video with “Track 13” and tagged Jack Antonoff, who presumably produced the song. But the lyrics and additional social media posts have led the world to question if the alt-pop singers are fight.
In addition to the lyric that outright names Cain, Del Rey also sings about “the most famous girl in the Waffle House,” which could possibly reference a 2022 New York Times profile of Cain with the same headline. (Let’s not forget, Del Rey was also once the most famous girl in a Waffle House when she took up a shift at one in Alabama.)
Unsurprisingly, the internet hasn’t been normal about any of this. Fans speculated about the potential friction between Del Rey and Cain. One X user posted a side by side photo of both singers posing with Jack Donoghue, who once dated Del Rey, and tried to connect it to the “think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose” lyric.
First, fans online criticized the singer for posting the video during Taylor Swift’s appearance on the New Heights, where Swift announced her new album. “Lana sharing Track 13. Same day taylor swift announced her Album. Knowing 13 is taylor’s lucky number,” one user on X wrote. Another X user pointed out that the Antonoff tag was an intentional move. “Lana teasing track 13 of her album and tagging co writer Jack Antonoff is lowkey Taylor shade because obviously Taylor announced her album covers and track list and didn’t work with jack on this album at all so here Lana goes being all messy,” the post read.
In the hours since Del Rey teased the song snippet, both she and Cain have posted on social media. Cain shared an Instagram story with a black background and white text that read: “Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.” Meanwhile, Del Rey took to Pop Base’s Instagram comments to further explain the song’s lyrics and her conflicting feelings with Cain.
In a since-deleted comment, Del Rey wrote: “I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.”
