Viewers complained about the slow pace of her decorating, the apparent lack of progress, and the way she seemed paralyzed by possibility—but the paralysis was the point. Carrie needed time to learn who she was in a space that belonged entirely to her. The townhouse functioned as both metaphor and mirror throughout the series, reflecting her internal state back at her until she was ready to change it. “I have to quit thinking, ‘Maybe a man…’” Carrie tells Charlotte about halfway through the final episode. “And start accepting, maybe just me.”
