For one of the most celebrated movies of all time, another redemption arc is on the horizon.
Released in 1994 to modest box office numbers, “The Shawshank Redemption” has since become a resounding success, landing a top spot on cinema rankings from IMDb to Rolling Stone. Now, it’s making its way up the streaming charts as well.
“The Shawshank Redemption,” is raking in views on streaming, years after it was a box office dissapointment.
Back on Peacock for audiences’ home-viewing pleasure, the movie, which follows one prisoner’s odyssey through a cruel system, broke into the platform’s top 10 most-watched titles this week.
Based on a Stephen King novella, “Shawshank” tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who was convicted of killing his wife and her lover and sentenced to life in prison despite a plea of not guilty. While in prison, Dufresne befriends fellow inmate Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), known for helping to smuggle contraband into the penitentiary.
That’s just ‘Psycho’: These 10 classic movies never won an Oscar
The movie, which spans 19 years, nabbed seven Academy Award nominations and was a critical darling, but failed to capture popular appeal at the time of its release. Audiences of the now-beloved movie seem keen to dip into the drama, with a renewed interest in Dufresne’s epic and complicated story.
It’s a career-defining performance from Freeman as well, so fans may want to soak up the acting legend’s talent before he signs off the big screen for good.
In an interview earlier this year with USA TODAY, Freeman hinted at a possible impending retirement, saying: “I imagine … I might be at the point where I say, ‘OK, y’all, I quit.'”
How to watch ‘The Shawshank Redemption’
