The Buffy Line Inspired By Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Best Horror Movie

Sarah Michelle Gellar in <em><a class="link " href="https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/topic/buffy-the-vampire-slayer" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Buffy the Vampire Slayer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas">Buffy the Vampire Slayer</a></em> season 1

Despite being the lead star of spooky show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar hasn’t acted in too many horror films. With respect to her performance in movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer and even Scooby-Doo, we’re firm believers that the best scary movie she ever starred in was Wes Craven’s Scream 2. The actor positively slayed onscreen, but what most Buffy fans don’t know is that Craven’s seminal horror sequel led to a fun throwaway line from Xander in the Season 2 premiere “When She Was Bad.”

This Buffy episode gets the action going almost right away, featuring a vampire attacking fan-favorite characters Xander and Willow. Buffy shows up to save the day, dusting the vamp before it can turn her friends into bloody corpses straight out of a horror movie. After thanking the Slayer for the save, Xander mentions, “I like your hair,” and this line of dialogue was only added to the script because Gellar got a cute new haircut before she tangled with Ghostface on the silver screen.

Nobody was more shocked by the Buffy star’s new ‘do in that horror film than fans of her hit TV show. The success of the series transformed Gellar into a household name, and audiences were quite familiar with the hairstyle that she was sporting throughout Season 1.

Her hair in Scream 2 looked absolutely great, but it was styled very differently from her usual Buffy Summers look, and Gellar’s tight shooting schedule (what with bouncing between movie and TV show) meant there was no time to return her locks to their old look. Therefore, showrunner and episode writer Joss Whedon had Xander praise her new hair in passing to acknowledge the new look. As for Buffy, she was a teenage girl who visited her dad over the summer, so her coming back with a smoking new ‘do seemed relatively realistic.

For Gellar’s role in Scream 2, many Buffy fans were surprised that she was onscreen so little, getting killed relatively early in this horror film. However, her premature death was intentional: as with Drew Barrymore’s appearance in the first Scream, Gellar was there to fool audiences into thinking that this famous movie star would last a long time and maybe even become the final girl. Instead, she was killed early to send a clear message to audiences: if Ghostface can kill the Slayer this easily, then nobody is safe.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new hair left a lasting impression on Buffy fans, and the actor also left a major impression on this horror film franchise. While her Cici character is definitely killed off in Scream 2, Scream 3 features a character named Sarah Darling (played by Jenny McCarthy) whose name is a reference to how Wes Craven referred to Gellar on set: “Sarah, darling.” Additionally, Gellar allegedly had difficulties balancing shooting for Scream 2 and shooting for Buffy, and these difficulties are mirrored by the Sarah Darling character’s struggles in Scream 3.

There you have it, Buffy fans: Xander’s throwaway line about the Slayer’s new hair in “When She Was Bad” was only added to acknowledge the glow-up Gellar got from appearing in Scream 2. It’s a light and fun reference, which is a bit ironic considering that Gellar herself seemingly didn’t have a great time starring in Craven’s fun, flawed horror sequel. Fortunately, the actor soon returned to Sunnydale to do what Buffy does best: make the world safer, one dead demon at a time.
