One of Fox’s longest-running sitcoms, Married… with Children, was a major hit among viewers in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The network abruptly canceled the show, leaving viewers heartbroken. Many wondered why the show was canceled without receiving a proper finale.
Here’s what the lead actors of Married… with Children had to say about the cancellation.
Why FOX abruptly canceled Married… with Children after 11 seasons
Married… with Children focused on Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill), a disgruntled shoe salesman, and his wife Peggy (Katey Sagal) as they managed their dysfunctional family. The show premiered on April 5, 1987, and ended after airing its last episode, “Chicago Shoe Exchange,” on June 9, 1997.
Fox stated that viewership had been steadily declining since the show’s sixth season. The effects became more noticeable in the later seasons. Additionally, rising cast salaries contributed to the cancellation. Fox failed to notify the cast directly, leaving them disappointed. Most of them heard about the decision from outside sources.
During an interview on Christina Applegate’s MeSsy podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), O’Neill said that he learned about it from a newlywed couple that approached him when he was in his hometown.
O’Neill said, “So I was standing there, and they got out of the car. It was the husband and wife. She was in the gown, and he was in the tux. And he said, ‘Oh my God. It’s Al Bundy in Ohio.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, congratulations, you got married!’ And they said, ‘Yeah. Oh my God, we can’t believe it.’ And the woman said, ‘Well, we’re so sorry about your show.’ And I said, ‘What do you mean?’ And the guy said, ‘Oh my God. He doesn’t know. It’s on the radio. You got canceled. Oh, we’re so sorry.’ And I said, ‘I’d rather hear it from you.’”
On the podcast, Applegate, who played Kelly Bundy, also recalled that a distant source informed her. She said, “I found out from a guy who knew a guy who worked for my assistant at the time. That’s how I found out. They never called us.”
O’Neill had pitched a special final episode, which never came to fruition.
