Singer Joss Stone is looking back at her decision to leave a past abusive relationship.
Stone, 38, was answering a fan question from her “A Cuppa Love” podcast in an Instagram video on Saturday, August 16, when a listener wrote in about being “ready to leave” a relationship and asking for “help” getting out. Stone said the note made her “take a breath” when she read it, knowing the answer couldn’t wait until her next podcast.
In a series of follow-up videos posted on Sunday, August 17, Stone shared advice for the listener, saying “having a plan” for how to leave “is a really good idea.”
Stone then revealed that she experienced a similar situation.
“I had tried to leave him, I can’t tell you how many times,” Stone said of the past relationship, not revealing the identity of her then-partner. “Each time it felt like it was getting more and more dangerous. One day, he threw me out — surprising how strong he was, he wasn’t that tall.”
Stone claimed that he “threw me out in the rain” when she was wearing nothing more than a T-shirt.
“He thought that he’d locked the gate and that I was stuck in the driveway, and I didn’t know the code to get out. He just thought he’d sort of trapped me in the rain,” she recalled. “I did know the code.”
Once she opened the gate, Stone recalled thinking “there’s no way he can hurt me” and ran away from the house.
“My feet were killing me, getting ripped up by the bloody concrete,” she continued. “I’m running and I’m thinking, ‘I’m going to get to the end of this road,’ and I don’t have anything.”
Stone “kept running” but didn’t have her phone. Eventually, Stone realized “that f***er was running after me.”
“It was so annoying,” she added. “Anyway, he did catch me and did tell me that the police were going to come and arrest me and all that stuff. It was all a load of bulls***.”
Stone said he “dragged me back” into the house, but she later found a way to leave the relationship behind.
“I was able to leave him because I am a touring musician. So, I used to go on the road to do my job,” she explained. “I just decided to never go back. That was actually easy. I don’t need to be noble and kind and try to break up with him face-to-face. I tried to do that many, many times and it was extremely dangerous.”
