Joyce Manor Reveal New Song “All My Friends Are So Depressed”

Joyce Manor are back with “All My Friends Are So Depressed,” the trio’s first new song in three years.

With a shuffling groove and an overall lack of distortion on their guitars, “All My Friends Are So Depressed” is a more somber, meditative offering from Joyce Manor. They channel the song’s strung-out subject matter in their melancholy arrangement, which includes wistful “Ahhs” and softer tones, all while frontman Barry Johnson provides his best Morrissey impression. For “All My Friends Are So Depressed,” the band was inspired by The Smiths, 100 gecs, and Lana Del Rey, as well as The Libertines, X, and Tiger Army. “The first line I came up with for this song was ‘lord above in a Tecate truck’ after passing a Tecate delivery truck with Jesus shit all over it on the freeway driving back to Long Beach after a show in Fresno,” Johnson explained in a press release.

“While searching for a line that rhymed with ‘lord above in a Tecate truck’ I came up with ‘why even exist? Who gives a fuck!?’ and the concept of ‘All My Friends Are So Depressed’ was born. It’s kind of my take on what I imagine Lana Del Rey lyrics are like. Instead of icy, detached cool 50’s Americana, it’s all dirty shag carpet, bong rips, Peter Frampton Comes Alive, key lime pie and suicidal ideations.”

“All My Friends Are So Depressed” is Joyce Manor’s first new music offering since their 2022 effort, 40 oz. to Fresno. Since that album’s release, the band has gone on to tour and collaborate with Weezer, released a split single with Tigers Jaw, embarked on US treks with PUP, Jawbreaker, and The Gaslight Anthem, and performed their songs “Constant Headache” and “Catalina Fight Song” on Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney’s initial run, Everybody’s In LA.
