A second installment of a film that showcases metro Detroit chefs and the city’s culinary history debuts next month.
“Detroit: The City of Chefs II,” from local filmmaker and former chef Keith Famie, is a documentary about prominent chefs and restaurateurs and the metro Detroit culinary scene. This film follows “Detroit: The City of Chefs,” which premiered in December 2024.
The film’s premiere will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Emagine Novi, 44425 W. 12 Mile Road. Included in the ticket is a chef’s reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. featuring food from the culinary arts programs at Schoolcraft College, Oakland Community College and by well-known chef Jimmy Schmidt.

The film also covers the late culinary icon James Beard, the prestigious food awards named after him and what being nominated for the awards means to chefs. Also, a highlight of the film is the role of Michigan chefs in culinary competitions and the state’s high concentration of Certified Master Chefs.
According to the film’s trailer, chefs and restaurateurs featured include Schmidt and culinary arts instructors. The film also features interviews with current metro Detroit chefs and restaurateurs, James Rigato of Mabel Gray, Mike Ransom of Ima, and Anthony Lombardo of SheWolf. Also highlighted is the role and impact of metro Detroit’s culinary arts schools, including Schoolcraft College with its many master chef instructors.
