Sydney Sweeney’s latest film was not a financial success following harsh criticism over her American Eagle advertisement.
According to an article published in The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday, August 17, Americana bombed at the box office in its opening weekend as it premiered in 1,123 theaters nationwide, grossing an estimated $500,000, which put the crime thriller in sixteenth place.
The film, directed by Tony Toast, first debuted in 2023 at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival and is part of Lionsgate Premiere’s film division. It stars the 27-year-old White Lotus alum alongside Paul Walter Hauser and singer Halsey.
A synopsis of the film on IMDB reads: “The lives of local outsiders and outcasts violently intertwine when a rare Lakota Ghost shirt falls onto the black market in a small South Dakota town.”
However, despite the flick’s low opening numbers, insiders told The Hollywood Reporter they are in line with the “multi-platform strategy” that the Lionsgate Premiere division follows, which aims for a niche audience, has a low marketing budget, and focuses on streaming.
As the National Enquirer previously reported, the Euphoria star came under fire recently for her campaign with American Eagle.
In the commercial, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,” before she adds, “my jeans are blue.”
The video ends with the phrase, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
Many fans deemed the video to be tone-deaf and argued it promoted eugenics and white supremacy.
