Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. notched the 100th home run of his MLB career in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers. In doing so, he entered an elite group of shortstops.
Five others at the position have reached the century mark through their age-25 season, a group that includes Álex Rodríguez and Cal Ripken Jr.:
“It was special, just seeing the kind of names on the list or whatever they showed,” Witt said after the game. “But now, it’s just kind of on to the next. It was special. We enjoy it. And now it’s just on to the next game.”
The 25-year-old is also the youngest in Royals history to get to 100 dingers:
Witt went 1-for-4 on Tuesday night and made his one hit count. He hammered a Cole Winn cutter 449 feet over the center field fence. That gave Kansas City a three-run cushion before John Schreiber nailed down the save in the ninth.
The two-time All-Star debuted for Kansas City in 2022 and made a big jump in his second season, finishing seventh in the American League MVP voting. Last year, he had the second-most WAR (10.5) among position players at FanGraphs.
While Witt isn’t quite matching that pace in 2025, he has a .291/.351/.493 slash line and is leading all of MLB in doubles with 38.
The Royals were proactive in keeping their franchise cornerstone around for the long term. Witt’s $288.8 million extension goes through 2037, though he can opt out as early as 2031.
It’s hard not to start projecting out and imagining where he could rank among Kansas City greats if he sticks around for the majority of that deal.
