SHEBOYGAN – Al Jardine and the 10-person Pet Sounds Band will bring a bit of the Beach Boys’ California sun and West Coast feel to the Malibu of the Midwest this week.

Well known for being one of the members of the original band, Al, 82, will take the stage of the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts, 826 N. Eighth St., Aug. 22. He will be joined by the former touring band of Brian Wilson, founder of The Beach Boys, who died at age 82 June 11.

“Brian’s never really left,” Jardine told the Sheboygan Press. “It’s almost as if he’s here all the time through the music.”

Wilson stopped touring in 2022. Jardine said Wilson listened and gave notes to him and his son, Matthew, who toured with The Beach Boys and Wilson for decades.

The tribute tour will perform hits like “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Good Vibrations,” as well as deep tracks from “The Beach Boys Love You,” “15 Big Ones” and “The M.I.U. Album.”

Jardine said big fans, and new fans, of The Beach Boys will be delighted because selections from those albums haven’t been performed before this tour. They’ve already been performed at stops in Minnesota, Massachusetts and Arizona.

“It was like an old Beach Boys show,” he said about the show in Massachusetts. People were standing up and screaming. “We couldn’t quite believe it.”

Growing up in Ohio, Jardine said he’s definitely heard of Sheboygan before.

“How can you forget a name like Sheboygan?” he said.

Al Jardine’s new EP ‘Islands in the Sun’ reminiscent of ‘Kokomo’ island sounds

Jardine also released a four-song EP in May called “Islands in the Sun,” a nod to The Beach Boys’ 1988 song “Kokomo.” Jardine said the EP reminds him of the old days of the band, and in the spirit of island life, he wanted to explore another “escapist fantasy” song like Kokomo.

Jardine said the idea of capturing lightning in a bottle inspired one line from the title track: “Now wouldn’t it be fun if we could bottle up the sun?”

The album features musicians like Neil Young and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and reimagined songs with The Beach Boys flair: The Coasters’ “Smokey Joe’s Café” to Jardine’s “Highway 101 (Rosarita Beach Café)” and “Crumple Car,” a song from the 1978 film “Big Wednesday.”

Jardine isn’t sure yet if “Islands in the Sun” songs will be performed Aug. 22.

He released his first solo album, “A Postcard from California,” in 2010.
