For the first time ever, the Millstone Community Theatre Guild will take the stage at the Heritage Hills Auditorium with its production of Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias this weekend.
The beloved play, inspired by the author’s own sister, blends humor with heartfelt moments capturing the close bond between six women in a small-town beauty shop.
“We wanted a play with lots of laughs at a time when our community needs them,” said Liz Michael, Founder of Millstone Community Theatre. “Even though the play has sadness, it also has joy — the joy of the tight bond of friendship between the six women characters.”
The cast features Christina M. Bentley as M’Lynn, Kim Miller as Clairee, Deandra Cornet as Shelby, Hannah Hamblin Flora as Ouiser, Anne Marie McLean as Truvy, and Amanda Ramsey as Annelle. The production is directed by Mary Scott, with William Hibbits as assistant director and Chris Campbell overseeing props and sound.
Michael said she hopes audiences will not only be entertained but also find a piece of themselves in the story.
“They will be able to sympathize with the players by seeing themselves or someone they know in the characters,” she said. “There is nothing like community theatre for friends, relatives and neighbors to gather together for the shared experience of live theatre.”
Michael added that the show has provided a meaningful creative outlet for the cast.
“Involvement in theatre is a wonderful way to express one’s self, and it gives players, especially young ones, a boost in self-confidence. It’s magic, and it requires the three D’s — desire, determination and dedication.”
The upcoming performances are set for Saturday, August 23, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 24, at 2 p.m., with admission being $10.
