“Ferris Bueller” Stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Reunite on the Set of a New Film

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck were seen reuniting this week, as they filmed a scene from their upcoming movie The Best Is Yet to Come in Vancouver.

Deadline reported in May that the film —  based on the French film of the same title — focuses on a pair of best friends who, “through a colossal misunderstanding that creates a ticking clock, hop in a car to find the estranged son of one of them and also try to do all the things that life has prevented them from doing.”

The reunion comes 39 years after their 1986 film, which follows Ferris, played by Broderick, as he and his perpetually pessimistic friend Cameron Frye (played by Ruck) embark on the most epic high school skip day ever, ditching class to spend time in downtown Chicago.

The film launched then-23-year-old Broderick’s career.

In 2023, Broderick appeared on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast to discuss the making of the 1986 teen comedy, recalling that director John Hughes, who died in 2009 at age 59 from a heart attack, “was not easygoing in some ways.”

During “a costume test early on” in the shoot, he said, there was “a big drama.”

“When the footage came back, he said none of us were ‘fun to watch.’ ” Broderick recalled. “We were ‘boring’ in our tests. Actually, some of us he did like, but some he did not, and I was one he did not.”

He continued: “to have [Hughes] say, ‘I’m not used to having somebody be so dead,’ or whatever he said to me. I wasn’t really ‘in it’ or something. That happened and I said, ‘So get somebody you like.’ “

While he noted that the first disagreement lasted only “half a day,” Broderick also said Hughes “was somebody who could get angry at you.”

“Not outwardly angry, but you could tell. He would turn dead. Dead-faced, I would say, ‘What did you think of that?’ And he’d say, ‘I don’t know.’ Just nothing. ‘Okay. John doesn’t like that,’ ” he recalled, further explaining a time when he told Hughes he felt “kind of conscious” when the director noted facial expressions he liked from his leading actor.

“He was like, ‘Well, then, I won’t direct you at all,’ ” Broderick said. “And for a few days he didn’t give me anything. Until I finally had to say, ‘John, you have to direct me, come on.’ That was our worst one.”
