The new scripted Hulu series “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox” premiered on Wednesday, Aug. 20. It follows the real-life story of the University of Washington student who was convicted and later acquitted in the 2007 slaying of her British roommate while studying abroad in Italy.
Knox, a Seattle native, is an executive producer on the show along with Monica Lewinsky. In an essay for ELLE magazine, Knox said she was deeply involved in crafting the limited series, from making casting decisions and modifying scripts to assisting with costume design and co-writing the series finale with showrunner K.J. Steinberg.
“The whole endeavor has been an incredibly gratifying experience, because there are hundreds of very talented people working tirelessly, some of them for years, to tell my story in a thoughtful and artistic fashion,” wrote Knox, now 38 years old. “And they’re doing it in alignment with my values: Everything is nuanced, there are no black-and-white narratives, no mustache-twirling villains, just flawed and complicated humans.”

What was Amanda Knox accused of?
While studying in Perugia, Italy, in 2007, Knox and her then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were arrested in connection with the killing of Knox’s housemate, Meredith Kercher, the New York Times reported. Knox and Sollecito were convicted of murder in 2009. Separately, in 2008, another defendant, Rudy Guede, was convicted of murder in Kercher’s death and spent 13 years in prison, the Guardian reported.
Knox and Sollecito spent four years in Italian prison and were initially exonerated in October 2011, when an appeals court threw out their original convictions, USA TODAY reported. They were exonerated a second time in March 2015 in a decision by Italy’s highest court, the Supreme Court of Cassation. Nearly a decade after the second acquittal, Knox returned to Italy for another trial on slander charges related to the initial interrogation. Specifically, that trial addressed a signed confession from Knox falsely accusing her former boss of the murder.
The New York Times reported that a Florence court convicted Knox on slander charges in June 2024, and the slander conviction was upheld in January 2025. Knox was sentenced to three years in prison, but didn’t have to serve any time because she had already spent four years in prison from 2007 to 2011.
