Brent Hinds, co-founder and former lead guitarist for the popular heavy metal band Mastodon, has died. He was 51.

The musician died when he was struck by a BMW SUV while riding his Harley Davidson in Atlanta, Georgia Wednesday night, Atlanta News First reported citing local police. The incident happened around 11:35 p.m. on Aug. 20.

Hinds’ death was also confirmed by his former band on Instagram Thursday.

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident,” Mastodon wrote in an Instagram post.

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,” the post read. “Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.”

Hinds formed the heavy metal group in 2000 alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. Hinds released eight albums through Mastodon during his time with the band. He amicably left Mastodon in March.

Mastodon earned their first Grammy nomination in 2007 for the single, “Colony Of Birchmen,” off the band’s third album “Blood Mountain.” They received further nominations in 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022. Mastodon took home the Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the song “Sultan’s Curse” also in 2018. Some of the band’s other notable songs include “Curl of the Burl,” “High Road” and “Show Yourself.”

Fellow musicians commented on Hinds’ death on Mastodon’s Instagram post.

“What a horrible day — love you guys,” metal musician Greg Puciato wrote.

Actress and singer Juliette Lewis commented, “We love you God bless,” while Mire guitarist Nick Hipa wrote, “Absolutely heartbreaking. Love and condolences to you all.”
