LOS ANGELES — First things first … “Splitsville” will not give you advice about having or not having an open relationship or open marriage.

In fact, Michael Angelo Covino, who directed and co-wrote “Splitsville,” told Spectrum News that anyone seeking advice on the matter should probably look somewhere else.

“Sure, maybe portions of this movie become a mirror, right? Where they go, I see myself in that or see an element of my life in that … they can reflect, but this movie is in no way intended to give relationship advice,” Covino said.

Both Covino and Kyle Marvin, who also co-wrote the film, said they are in no position to give any sort of relationship advice, but the sort of relationship the dynamic duo is great at is their friendship and their ability to work together throughout the years. Previously, the two had worked on the critically beloved “The Climb.”

“It’s intense to collaborate with your good friend … in a good way,” Covino said.

“There is something to be said about finding touch points … when you both sort of touch on something, like, ‘Oh that’s great,’” Marvin told Spectrum News.

That friendship and collaboration spills on to the screen in “Splitsville.” In the film, after Ashley (Adria Arjona) asks for a divorce, good-natured Casey (Marvin) runs to his friends, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Covino) for support. Casey is shocked to discover that the secret to their happiness is an open marriage, that is until Carey crosses the line and throws all their relationships into chaos.

For Marvin, it was taking a romantic comedy like “Splitsville” and putting their own spin on it. Part of that spin was the talented Dakota Johnson.

“’Splitsville’ is a very different kind of romantic comedy. It’s kind of raw and messy and very intelligent and very beautiful,” Johnson told Spectrum News.

She added that Marvin, Covino and Arjona are massively talented, and it was really fun making the film.

“Adria is massively talented and wonderful,” she said. “We had a really fun time.”

“Splitsville” opens in theaters this weekend. It stars Michael Angelo Covino, who also directs the film, Kyle Marvin, who co-wrote the film, Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona.
