Michelle Obama Reacts To Claims That She ‘Couldn’t Stand’ Barack

Michelle Obama and Dwyane Wade had an honest conversation about marriage on the latest episode of the former first lady’s podcast.

Wade said that he and his wife, actor Gabrielle Union, are a decade into their marriage, which made him think of a poignant comment Obama made back in 2022 that stuck with him.

“I heard you say that you had 10 years where you didn’t even like Barack, so I’m like, man ― where is that coming from?” Wade asked.

Obama said simply, “I just tell the truth.”

“You have these periods, right? And if you’re married for 30 years, like, you just look at the odds. If you’re going to be married 30 years and somebody told you a third of those times wouldn’t be great, you’d still take the odds,” she said, adding that “those are great odds!”

The “Becoming” author added that “marriage is beautiful” but also “difficult.”

“You don’t just walk away in the difficult times because you miss all the beauty because you think it’s got to be perfect,” she said, adding that it’s “never perfect.”

Obama made headlines in 2022 when she said, “there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband.”

“And for 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even. And guess what? Marriage isn’t 50/50 — ever, ever.’”

“There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, 40, but guess what?” she said. “Ten years — we’ve been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 — it’s just how you look at it.”
