Teen TV shows are known for having a lot of drama on screen — it’s why fans obsess over them. But while filming their new Prime Video romance film The Map That Leads to You, Riverdale alum KJ Apa and Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline bonded over how much happens off screen on those sets as well.
“Yeah, there’s a lot of drama that comes on shows like that,” Apa tells Entertainment Weekly. “Not to say in like a gossipy kind of way, but it’s just part of the environment, I guess. Part of the deal.”
Cline agrees, adding that the young casts ultimately can’t help but get close while filming teen TV shows.

“It’s like a family, you know what I mean?” she tells EW. “You spend so much time with [them].”
“It’s like the family you never asked for,” Apa adds, which makes Cline laugh. “It’s true, it’s true — in a beautiful way.”
Cline continues laughing as she corrects Apa, “You can’t really ever ask for family, that’s the whole point. So it really is like family, and of course, you spend that much time with people, and you love them, and—”
Apa interrupts her and adds, “You hook up with them, people hook up with each other.”
Cline laughs harder as she says, “Wait, no, that’s Alabama. We’re in South Carolina.”
Cline currently stars on Outer Banks, which films and is set in South Carolina about a group of teens who become treasure hunters. Cline was previously in a relationship with her costar Chase Stokes, but they announced their breakup in November 2021 — only months before starting production on season 3. Their characters John B and Sarah are still very much together on screen (with a baby on the way!) heading into the fifth and final season.
Meanwhile, Apa has never been romantically linked to any of his Riverdale costars, but during EW’s interview, he keeps doubling down on how teen TV costars “have sex” with each other.

“You have sex with them and stuff, and then things start happening,” Apa says. “And then things get a little complicated, and then you’re on set, and now you’re fighting with them.”
When Cline asks him, “So it’s the same in Vancouver [where Riverdale was filmed]?”
Apa widens his eyes and lets out a big breath.
“You sort of just have sex with them, and then you just sort of see what happens,” Apa repeats. “It’s just part of the deal.”

Apa and Cline are both cracking up now as Apa drops one more bomb.
“I was a virgin when I started on that show, too, for the first couple years,” he says. “I was a proud Christian boy. I was.”
Apa starred as Archie Andrews on the CW’s Riverdale for seven seasons, beginning in 2017 through 2023. Meanwhile, Cline has starred as Sarah on Netflix’s Outer Banks since its debut in 2020. A premiere date for the final season has not yet been announced, but fabs can expect it sometime in 2026.
The two actors can currently be seen in The Map That Leads to You, Prime Video’s adaptation of JP Monninger’s globe-trotting romance novel of the same name, which is now streaming.
